Identifying a Buck X-tract led, model 731
on: September 06, 2010, 11:04:26 AM
Hi All,
I have been lurking for a while, but decided to finally de-cloak to ask a question regarding a Buck X-tract 731 led.
I just received it today :), and love it (came with the blade sharp enough to shave with, literally), and the led is ideal for quick equipment checks at work.

My question is how can you tell if it is a real buck or an extremely good knock off?

It will become my EDC along with a Gerber EAB Lite and most likely a keyring mounted Victorinox Manager.

Cheers

I am not aware of any Buck X-Tract fakes out there.

All of my Buck X-Tracts have that China stamp if that is what is worrying you. They are indeed quality pieces as not all that comes from China is cheap junk.

Buck has relocated production (or part of it) to China (I know it sucks but...)...

I have model 732 X-Tract Fin, also made in China... Excellent MT...

Looking at the Buck site the knives seem to have markings on the handles and the pouch logo's are different, I am happy with the knife it is a quality feeling and looking tool, just thought I would double check before leaving feedback.

Everything seems to have fakes these days. the below is advertised as a buck on www.knife911.com site :(

they also have this.

Fantastic! Looks like there is a Buck X-Tract fake out there for me to hunt and get. That first one you posted is definitely not a buck. The second photo appears to be one. That Buck Whitaker logo appears to show on some X-Tract models. I had 2 LED X-Tracts, one showing the twin peaks, the other not.

I'm confident that you have a genuine one Geebee. :salute: All of the markings on yours match up exactly with the one in my hand. :)

By the way, check out the little icon next to the "731" on your blade. According to this chart, your knife was made by Buck in 2010

After re-reading my second post, I think I need to clarify. Your first one is genuine. That first one of the second two photos is a fake. The second of that pair of photos look genuine.

Thank's chaps, for setting my mind at ease.

I have replaced a Wave clone (it was not sold as a LM) and AAA torch on my belt with it and the weight reduction is massive. :)

Did your Wave clone say Mammut on the handles. It actually isn't that bad for what it is.

Yes it is a Mammut, I was surprised at how good it was for $9 au. arrived nice and sharp too.
It will become the MT for potentially damaging type jobs around the house.
