Ran into a spot of bad luck.
on: September 14, 2010, 03:24:05 AM
I am not a superstitious guy. In fact, I am about as anti superstitious as anyone can get. However, I do recall hearing about bad luck coming in threes. I do seem to be in a spot of bad luck right now.

I woke up on Friday only to find my front passenger tire was flat. End result, after looking at all 4 at a garage, I felt it prudent to change all of them. That was a bit of an unexpected expense. A big strike one.

Next, I get home today and I find a package in the mail. I open it up to be very disappointed. The 3 Leathermans that I ordered from “Make” were not what I ordered. True enough, there were two plain Jane Squirt ES4s in there, but they had no Make markings. Likewise, the Make PS4 I ordered turned out to be a P4 with at least, the branding on the scales. However, It was no PS4, and I already have the P4 from a previous purchase. Groan.  I just emailed them to see if I can ship it back to them and hopefully, they can make it right.  That is strike two.

Strike three came when I sat down on my downstairs computer to email Make to see if they can fix my problem with the shipment.  I turned on the computer, but nothing came on screen.  For the last 2 weeks, I have had this weird computer issue. At first I thought it was the video card, and then the motherboard (I could usually get the image on screen if I pressed keys at random…go figure). But the clue it was the monitor was the geiger counter sounds emanating from the unconnected speakers in the monitor. Today, it just gave up the ghost. This left me scrambling to get another monitor if I wanted to deal with the miss shipment.

I went to Future Shop to find a replacement for my dead monitor. The dead unit was a Samsung 24” that I bought 2 years ago. It annoyed the living daylights out of me on a daily basis due to the touch interface. It lacked tactile feedback, was a major pain to try and find the right touch surface in the dark, and sometimes, did not even work as advertized, relegating me to pawing frantically at the general button area in vain hopes to turn on the unit. In short, the interface sucked. All Future Shop had on sale were newer versions of my 24” Samsung. I wanted something different this time around.

At Staples, I came across larger monitors for cheaper prices. I ended up with an Asus 26” monitor. I figure by the time this one dies, I will get a larger one for the same price. Seems the way of electronics.

I hope I don’t have to spend any more on unexpected things that break. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

On a plus note for you buddy, your snife knife came in today!  I'll ship it out to you tomorrow, and might I say, it looks awesome.

Hope things pick up for you tomorrow :tu:

Sorry to hear that...   :-[

On a brighter note, I think you'll like the new monitor.  I've had good luck with ASUS products (on an ASUS notebook right now), and their warranty and customer service seem pretty good.  Those spur-of-the-moment purchases are sometimes regretful, but that one should work out for you.  :salute:

I tend to put an Asus motherboard in my computer builds. I was also one the first adopters of the Eee PC. I do like Asus products. I did not know they started branding/making monitors though.

I will admit, I love the screen real-estate.

We have an old chinese tradition that bad luck sometimes comes in threes, so if we have two consecutive bad lucks we break a glass and say "Its Over".

Me too re: the motherboards.  Good stuff!  :tu:  I like my O!Play HDP-R1 media player too.

They're the only company I'm aware of that offers a 30 day "no dead pixel" warranty on their panels, standalone or notebook.

The ASUS notebook I'm currently using developed a dead pixel the second day of ownership.  I sent it in to have the panel replaced, and I received it in perfect order 12 days later.

I love Asus Gamers Choice motherboards. Glad to hear of their quick service turn around time.

Here is an update...

I just got a reply from Make. I am a bit surprised by their response to be honest. They apologized for the error, and have shipped me the right gear via 1st class USPS. They also told me to keep the rest.  :o

I was getting ready to ship them the 3 Squirts. Sort of happy I waited for their response. That is very generous of them.  :salute:

I am still holding the package as is for now, just incase. I still find it hard to believe they would just give me a Marked P4, and two different coloured ES4s due to an error. Mind you, one of the ES4s is a riveted one...which could be my first riveted Squirt. Still, that was very very nice of them...so far. Paint me suspicious.  :D
