Sorry I didn't think to explain
A lot of the trolleys here have a little lock and tiny piece of chain that fits in to the next trolley
You have to insert a pound coin to release the trolley
After shopping you return your trolley to the trolley 'park' and your pound coin is released
This tool will release the trolley without being captured by the lock thing

Here's an example  :D

Question - what's the rational for sticking a more expensive tool into a trolley to get stuck instead of a single pound?

I could be wrong, it has been known to happen; but with this 'tool' you put it into the trolley lock, release the trolley and put the tool back in your pocket  :tu:
This way you are not bound to having to return the trolley to the trolley 'park'; a bit naughty but hey-ho. A lot of major retailers have retired the locking trolley but there are still many a locking trolley about the country  :-\

With this multi-functional tool you'll always have it nearby

So, due to some design (or lack thereof!) the trolley is never capable of catching the tool? If so then it is indeed a naughty tool. I just hope this never happens to the US, though I do see bums roaming off with shopping carts all the time...

We always see plenty of shopping trolleys in rivers, etc.

I suppose if you're a teenager looking for some trolley fun then £1 is a small price to pay :D

Yes you release the trolley and the tool goes back in your pocket  ;)

If you leave a trolley on its own in the carpark for a few mins young lads stealthily appear form nowhere with a little smile on their faces thinking that the have scored a free quid

Over here most people have a plastic or metal substitute for the 1 EUR coin to put into the trolley. You get them quite often for free with advertisement printed on them ,for your keychain or implemented on a parking disc or ice scraper, and most have them in their purse. You can't spend it, so you always have the right "coin" for the trolley ready. Probably no extra money for the young lady who has to bring them back  :(
