Find me a SAK!!!
on: September 17, 2010, 02:45:08 PM
After my less than enthusiastic welcome for the Leatherman Wave I'm itching for a new toy. I love the OHO on the Wave but I'm not impressed by the fact you have to open the pliers to get to most of the tools. One possible solution is an OHO SAK. Anyone got thoughts, opinions on the following:

Trekker
Forester
Dual Pro/Dual Pro x
GAK
Soldier

From what I can gather they all have a fairly similiar toolset, I was looking for advice on how they feel in the hand, grip, weight, usefulness, any particular niggles, that sort of thing.

Thanks in advance

I am very fond of my Vic OHT & it is my hiking knife. I like the OH & the decent sized saw.
Now what I am not so fond of ; I really do not like combined edge blades, the OHT when using the blade I find the linner lock digs into your hand & makes it a little uncomfortable. When using the saw the blade does protrude out a lot & it too makes it a bit uncomfortable in use.
That said I am more than happy with my OHT & it is perfect when out hiking I also carry a plier based MT at the same time.

I have a Dual Pro X on the way from Tim  :D :D

Thanks MM, that's exactly the type of feedback I'm after. Really like the look of the Dual Pro/DP X too, can't find much info on the foum about it so would be very interested to hear what you think.

Trekker
Forester
Dual Pro/Dual Pro x
GAK
Soldier
As far as I am familiar with them (I have a Trekker, non OH), the OH Trekker, GAK and Soldier have the same toolset, but different scales.

I really like the tools on my Trekker. A good collection for outdoor use. I would love to have a OH blade from time to time, but I wanted to have something that is legal to carry all the time, and that ruled the OH models out. You might want to search for the topic on the phillips driver as a backspring tool if you are planning to use it heavily...  :ahhh

No worries mate  :D
Dunc told me the Dual Pro X is a bit uncomfortable in use , but I like the idea of a plain edge blade.I reckon I will put the DPX in my glove box , it will be my first knife with a rescue blade 8) 8).
I will let you know how I find it once I have used it  :tu: :tu:

I like MOST of the tools on the OH Trekker.

Just don't use the backside phillips for anything more than battery tray screws. ::)

If "feel in hand" is a big thing for you, personally I wouldn't recommend a OH SAK.

When using the blade they feel great, but fro pretty much everything else I find the OH hole is a PITA.  I would always choose a regular 111mm over an OH one.

To be honest, the OHO blades are what I'd use it for most, my Spirit would serve most other purposes. The extra tools on the SAK would be a bonus but probably not the main reason for me having it.

I could always go down the 'tactical folder' route but I'm not overly keen on the hardcore appearance of most of them. There's the nagging feeling I'd start to look like a bit of a dick. (no offence to the tactical fans out there :D)

the softer DD scales on some of the 111mms are great. I won a DD Nomad for a giveaway on the forum, and its a very neat and simple knife.

I used my OHT in the garden yesterday & today. My eldest son was helping me & he was really keen to saw away at some errant tree shoots "I like sawing" son, "Goodo Samo" me ,"can I saw this" son "NO that's a plant your mother planted"  :D :D.

I chucked the OHT in the dishwasher today as dirt had gotten into it & the saw was sticky. Came up good  :o 8) first time I have done the dishwasher thing  8)

I really like my OHT as it has a great tool selection and the one-hand opening is very smooth.

I found out that really works great. I had a very dirty SwissTool that came out like new :)

I remember that SOSAK article showed that the dishwasher isn't a good option for cellidor, the heat expands the liners, causing them to bend on the pins, bending the cellidor in turn, which remained distorted out of the wash. The nylon ones were okay though as far as I can remember.

Hull_ n_Back, Benner is right (in my opinion, of course). A regular Forester/Nomad is what I would choose, but in case you really like OH SAK's, you can look for one with a plain edge blade or you could get a regular one and reprofile it. It isn't as hard as it sounds. :)
