New Spyderco Slipjoint?
on: September 30, 2010, 06:15:10 AM
Didn't even see this one announced, but it is showing up at some sellers:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Spyderco-KIWI-3-all-Stainless-SLIP-IT-NEW-/230532113217?pt=Collectible_Knives&hash=item35acc8e341#ht_1772wt_1137

8Cr13Mov steel, seems to have a decent price.  Thoughts?

Dug around on the Spyderco forums, got some details.  Called the Kiwi 3, slipjoint made for the EU/UK market (but obviously for sale this side of the pond as well).  8Cr13MoV steel, solid SS handle, apparently total size is about 1cm longer than the Clipit (locking) Kiwis.

Best thing about it is since it's carried under the Spyderco brand and not the Byrd brand, it carries the full warranty and not the one year warranty, and MSRP is $27.95 which is well below the UK Lightweight.

As John's mentioned, it is shipping from Spydieguys.com already.

The seller has auctioned items, in the past, not in stock. I wouldn't try to get this knife from them.

Had a chance to play with this one today on my travels in town
http://www.warriorsandwonders.com/Spyderco/Spyderco_Kiwi_Stainless_Slip_Joint
and was ready to buy one but unfortunately upon playing with it for a minute or so I decided against it.

The biggest reason and as Jay mentioned it's a slippy but it's a stiff one!  He estimated 24lbs?  Maybe he
was making a joke I don't know, but I'll tell you one thing, lets call it "a two hand opener."  To make matters
more difficult it's a very thin knife, and lacks a pocket clip, which complicates opening it one hand.  Thirdly, I tucked it into my pocket, and keep in mind, this one doesn't come with a case so you'll feel it in pocket much the same
as you would a SAK.

However, it's a nice looking knife and the fit and finish did seem decent on it and for less than $20, well... he had only two left, there selling like hotcakes.  :)

It's designed to be a 2HO, as it was made for sale in the UK and EU, where a lot of places have laws against one handed opening knives.

From Sal Glesser on the Spyderco forums:

"The new model is the same size as the original kiwi.

It really wasn't designed to be easily one handed. It's more of a "pocket" knife that's ok in areas like Germany and New York, where laws are prohibitive.

I imagine we could add a clip if our customers would prefer one?

sal"

I would imagine that if you gave sal the big pretty eyes on the Spyderco forums, that could be added to the product description.

Nice.  Seems to me that it's a continuation of the Bug/Honeybee/Grasshopper line (thinking materials and price point).

Unfortunately I'd say that even though "It really wasn't designed to be easily [opened] one handed" I'm not sure that circumvents any laws.   Not easy isn't the same as impossible IMO.  :-\

I'm afraid you're right Gareth. :-\ Even the Spyderco DKPK especially made for Denmark is apparently illegal, because it can be opened OH with a little skill.. ::)

They just need to make a folder without that #"%#¤/% thumbhole.. :pok:  ;)

I agree that a lot can, whether or not they were designed to be or not.  Just don't tell the Danish police, OK? ;)

In this case though it's pretty obvious that the Kiwi won't pass muster in a country that's outright banned OHO knives (correct me if I'm wrong about that Allan).  It should be OK in New York as, AFAIK, the argument isn't OHO it's about that being able to Spydie-drop an knife makes it a gravity knife.  Germany just has legislation about the carrying of OHO's, not the ownership, so I can't see the issue there either.

Unfortunately I don't think they will make one without hole anytime soon. Something about to maintain a trademark it will have to be on every product, they even put holes on fixed blades that didn't have it before.

Sadly I don't think Spyderco will make an effort to produce anything for a small market like Denmark.
At least they tried, but the rest is history: The Spyderco DKPK.  :-\

Benner talking about his sebenza and UK customs made me think, what if someone take it apart and send it to you as bag of parts?

It's not the importing that's the issue here I believe, it's the actual ownership.  If I remember correctly just being caught owning own carries a hefty fine.

I could have had dozens of OH folders and tools if I wanted to go down that road. I don't see the point owning something that could
give me 7 days in jail if I carry it, eventhough some of those Spydies/Sebbies are mighty tempting.  But they'll just end
up in a drawer and I wouldn't share any pics online..  :-\
