84mm scissors that wont stay down?
on: October 03, 2010, 05:21:09 PM
Anyone know what to check or how to fix?  I push them in and they slowly start to raise back out...
Thanks

A) Bent spring? If this is the case, remove it and bend it back. Maybe it got a little to wide to allow the scissors to fold and stay that way. ;)

B) Uri Geller? If this is the case, slap him in the head and tell him to go find a real job. :D

It could also be that your backspring isn't providing enough tension.  Check for gunk, give it a thorough clean and a lube.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

I think I had a similar problem before and it involved both, gunk and a dirty back spring and the scissors spring got replaced.

I clean the edge of back springs when you open the tool part ways and that will expose the edge of it on one end. Usually I just use a finger nail or a wooden toothpick or sometimes if the stuff is really adhered to it use some thing like a razor blade to scrape it loose.

I am not sure if there are scissors springs that are too heavy pressure perhaps that is the wrong replacement part but I do know there are several sizes of springs so maybe adjust the spring some or even replace it?

Stressmaster may have the answer. It may be that you have a larger spring than called for in the knife. That would only be the case if you have a large spring in a 84mm or smaller knife.

Its weird because when I got it the scissors were down but when I opened it up to clean it, they wouldnt go down afterwards.  I didn't do anything out of the ordinary to it though...?

Has the liner either side of the scissors cracked at the backspring pivot?  Have a close look down into the knife.  What's the snap like when opening and closing them?

It looks to me like you have a large spring which is too large for the 84mm.

Thats a bummer.  Will probably effect the price I can get for it.  :(  I have a ton of possible replacement springs...but they are in other knives and I don't trust myself enough not to muck it up to try trade them out.
Thanks for your help all!

Its already listed w/bids.  I did disclose about the scissors in my auction description.  I was just hoping to be able to fix the scissors, edit my auction and make it more appealing.  I believe its an 84mm Climber, no?

If it has a small blade it's a Climber (small), but if it's got a nail file then its called an Alumnus.

Though as it say on the SAKwiki we're not certain where the name came from.

OK, I was looking over your Photobucket photos you posted and noticed the alox liners seem to have quite a bit of oxidation on them(the edges that can be seen). It is likely the liners have some more of it where the liners meet the back spring and this could be causing the lack of a strong snap and hold in place. It is next to impossible to remove this kind of problem by cleaning and oiling since it is actually metal that is corroded. Just a thought. :salute:

Another thing I noticed and was wondering about is if the scissors has a rivet or a screw pivot point? These scissors look very different to me.

Yep, in picture six you can see where the scissor backspring is cracked. I have an old golfer with that same problem. Looks exactly the same although mine is still holding together well enough as a user.

the middle layer, almost to the edge of the pic. you can see the faint line accross the backspring. that indicates the spring is cracked. you can probably see it more pronounced on the inside if you open all the tools and shine a flashlight inside.

It looks like the key ring mounting liner is bend inward toward the scissors. That might be pushing the scissors out. Use a needle nose to bend it away from the scissors. That might help.
