Fenix E05
on: October 23, 2010, 11:48:45 PM
Fenix has a new 1xAAA flashlight. Slightly smaller than the E01, single mode, 27 lumens. It's pretty cheap, about $20. I'm not really excited about it though. To me, the E01 is still much better. The E01 is cheaper, has a longer battery life, has been proven reliable, and comes in lots of colors. Once you get over $15, iTP comes knocking pretty hard.

Not particularly good value, considering the cost of the ITP A3.

If it was cheaper and with the addition of a low mode, Fenix might have a winner.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

Really I don't understand why they didn't just come out with an updated E01. Same brightness, longer runtime, slightly shorter for just a bit more money than the E01. And keep the colors. A little style never hurt.

They also have a limited number of 30 lumen R4 emitter E05's.

I want to see runtimes before I run out to get any of the R2 emitter E05's, though with that said, I may end up with getting another E01 for a certain girl who is a friend of mine. >.> *cough*

Emitter limitations, you can only pump so much current through a 5mm LED before it fries.

Color on this one should be better.

Yeah it's tough to get excited about that one when the original E01 is a far more practical light :-\

For that money I'd stick with my iTP but on the plus side maybe the beam isn't blue any more ::)  That was the deal killer for me on the E01.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

I'm maybe not 'excited' by this one, but I can kinda see the point.  27 lumen sounds like a good working light level and any tint has got to be better than the E01's.  I suspect it'll be the run times that'll make or break this light.

The emitter is more efficient, and fenix always have one, if not the most efficient circuit on the market, will be hard to muck it up.

Well, I've been doing some reading over at what my friend calls "The Nerdy Flashlight Forum." It turns out runtimes for the E05 are right around 3 hours. I guess it's aiming for a totally different segment the the E01. In related news, 4-7s is coming out with an E01 competitor. "It's going to be significantly smaller than the e01." I'm so excited.

Guess I might get it, the E01 is one of my real EDC items (for it is on my keys) but it could be brighter for my taste. So the E05 sounds just fine.

Shame that won't be around for Christmas.  :-\

I'm thinking about giving out a couple of E01's for gifts this year, and it seems like a shame not to let one of the E05's fall in my basket at the same time.  I'll let you chaps know if I get one.

As noted some people do not like the E01's tint. In real world use I hardly notice the tint. That being said, I have an E05 coming. The run-time is a trade-off of course. I don't use my lights for more than a minute at a time so, around 3 hours is alright by me. I will give you my impressions when I get it. In the meantime, The Bright Side website has a nice review on the E05.

OK the price isn't silly and I really quite fancy one of these.  I will however wait a little and see how others like it. :)

I'm currently rethinking my flashlite options a bit at the moment, and carrying one of those as a back up, to say an Infinity or other floody, close range light is making sense to me :)

Lots of flood in that set-up Mike, but not much throw.  Is that the idea?

Floody can be good.

I prefer a bit of throw with the option of a diffuser, but thats a whole new topic that been done to death previously :D

For a floody backup the E05 should do the trick.

Pretty much yeah :)

I was checking above a false ceiling at work yesterday, and my Infinity just couldn't quite shine across the distance with enough power (about 50-60 foot), so something with a bit more throw would of been handy :)

The E05 with all flood should be a good light for many tasks. Much like the Infinity Ultra yet smaller for EDC use. If a light has a bright hot spot my eyes will focus on that giving me tunnel vision. Of course that bright hot spot has great throw.
