Wave vs. Charge TTi - Is the TTi worth the extra $30?
on: December 01, 2010, 09:43:49 AM
So trying to decide to get a Wave (again) or go with something I've never owned, a Charge TTi.

Weight difference is only 0.3 of an ounce.
Wave is more affordable.
Charge TTi has comfortable scales, cut-hook (+1), wire crimpers (no option to get without one), better steel on main blade.

Wave is about $60, Charge TTi $90; Is the TTi worth the extra $30?

I wouldn't pay the extra 30$.
My brother has a wave and it seems comfortable enough as is.
Chuck Norris' preferred iron supplement is rebar.

To me, it comes down to the guthook.  If you cut a lot of twine, or open boxes where contents could be easily damaged, $30 is cheap.  If not, I'd go with the Wave.  Both have the diamond coat file which is awesome.

For me it's the line cutter/gut hook that make all the difference, I use it often.  The Ti scales also add noticeable comfort over the Wave.

If you pick up a TTi used it presents a better value than a new Wave.

I suggest buying the TTi because you're just going to want one anyway after handling the Wave.  In the long run, you can actually save money buying the better tool up front  :salute:

Well, to me looks has a lot to do with it, all other things pretty much equal.
I've always loved the looks of the Titanium charges however have never been
quite able to spend what they want for them up here and complete.  You are
looking at over $150.  :o  If affordable, I'd go Titanium!

I suppose it really comes down to cost and personal tastes.

If you can afford the TTi without going hungry I would recommend it. It really is a Wave Deluxe. The gut hook is handy, the cap crimper not so much. The coolness factor counts for a lot as well  :tu:

If you don't get on with it you still have a high value multitool which is much sought after by all. When did you last see a TTi on the trade boards?

I say TTi  :D

If you work around oily things, like a lot of mechanic's,go for the TTi,and if you can find a TTi for only $90,thats a good buy any time. :salute:

Owner of both here.  They are both great tools.  Here are some additional oddball points to consider: wave scales can be more readily engraved; it is easier to remove the fixed lanyard loop on the tti (only requires a single security torx bit); the outside saw and file tend to rub against the scales on the charge moreso than the wave; the charge feels more substantial to hold and when opening and closing, imo; the main blade on the charge is a notch above it's counterpart on the wave in materials & finish.

You can't go wrong with either.  However, you should buy the tti.  It is worth the extra $.  :tu:

Thank you all for your valued input, and dealing with a few polls. Tonight I got a second chance and ordered a Charge TTi off of eBay, from a gal over in Coos Bay, Oregon.

Means the TTi should be here in a day or two once shipped.  :D

I see you snagged the complete setup, very good.  You made the best decision and will thank yourself once you see the TTi in person   :D

If I can get 9 folks to kick in $80, I'd plump for it.  I'll start a new thread and we'll see what happens.

Got a reply from her this morning too:

Quote
we had a total of 3 inches WOW.... not a thing like what yall get
thanks for buying tell your friends we should have a few more soon
ill try to ship this, this morning k thanks and have a great holiday
season
- buyandsellshell

The locals have Waves up at $70 to $85, so $90 was a very good deal!

Now... two things I'd like to do at some point in time... heat the scales up and turn them purple, and get an awl in there. Suppose I could use the flathead as a template for an awl that I can extract from a Super Tool 300.
