R2 to R5
on: December 12, 2010, 03:42:51 AM
Upgraded my dropin from R2 to R5. Here are some pics:

From R2 to XP-G (R5). Notice the spring I cut to fit in the host, my SF G2Z

Orange peel reflector of the R2

Smooth reflector of th R5

From  distance of 5 meters and using 17640s on my other light, the Ultrafire, compared with an R2 the R5 has a bigger flood  (right) but the tint is quite yellowish unlike the former which is so white.
I'm not sure about the exact lumens, but with an R5 module, it's 300++lumens.

Gene, I have converted several incan Surefire to R2. I just remove the big spring. No need of cutting it.

Nice R5 module you got there, Gene.

Yeah you're right, Ed. But it doesn't work on Nitrolon. The torch is not working properly when there's no spring. The little spring acts a 'contact point' with the metal tube inside the body of the SF:

To calculate the increase in lumens from the R2 bin LED to the R5 bin in these two modules, you would have to know at what current each module is driving the LED.

Assuming that they are driven at the same level, an R5 bin will give you a 20% increase in lumens over an R2.  Keep in mind that our eyes perceive lumens on a logarithmic scale, so a 20% increase in lumens would only appear as a 2% increase in brightness to your eye.

Does your R2 module have an XP-E emitter, or XP-G?  From the pictures, both dies look like XP-G, but it's hard to tell for sure.
