I like the looks of the new ones as well, but I would like to see them in person to compare to my TTi.

what do people prefer, new tti scales or old scales?

i have the old scales/model and i don't know if i would like it if i got the new scaled one as a replacement if i break anything.

what do you guys think?

I have both styles. I like the old ones for sentimental reasons (first MT ever was an XTi with old style scales) but I like the look of the new ones as well.

IMO, they are both great and I would not hesitate to buy another with the new scales.

Yeah, that reinforces that I like the new style better.  I think I heard that they are slightly thicker?  I do remember that my Charge AL was just a slight bit thicker than my TTi.

That was a great Idea.........thank you Toolslinger :waving: MTo makes me poor
I love this old Charge, its a used one (shelf queen) in perfect condition and really nice and everything works perfect smooth.
The only thing......I always thought the older Charge series has "only" a 154cm blade and a normal serrated blade but look at the pics.
The other strange thing is......it has the same datestamp as my TTi........05/13 on both handles ???

I might be the only one who doesn't like the look of titanium handle scales and prefer stainless steel.

What you got is a TTi with the old style scales. This is normal and I have one like that as well. The TTi has the S30V blade and came in both scale configurations with the current model being the redesigned ones.

The older Charge Ti and XTi have the 154cm blades and were only available with the old scales. These are retired tools and haven't been available for a few years.

The date stamp makes sense as the only change to the TTi was the scales. All of the inner workings are the same. Leatherman would be using parts from a large batch made at that date stamp and would use them on any compatible tools until they ran out and had to make more. Since this is a TTi, it is possible that it was made near the end of the old scale run and the new scaled TTi you have was made near the beginning of the new scale run.

That is still a nice looking charge though :tu:.

When I think of Leatherman......I always see a Charge Ti in my mind's eye :D
I EDC a Wave RX (Wave with Rebar pliers and two bitholders)daily at work but the Charge is my favorite Multitool and now that I own 2 of them I want more :D
So if I find some more older Charges like a Ti, XTi or one in Camouflage I will buy it......as far as I have enough money  :( :D

@Chako...I love those Camouflage Charge :tu: never seen those over here in Germany :(

I wouldn't doubt it. Those were exclusives from the Bass Pro Shop and Cabela's, two big American outdoor store chains.

I have a few more Charges not shown however. I decided to store some away in their respective boxes, so I have the 25th Anniversary silver charge, and a couple of Charge SLVs hidden away.

If you look very closely, you can just make out a few Charges produces for the Danish market. I guess knife laws in Denmark prohibit the capability of opening a tool one handed...so Leatherman removed the blade hole, making them 2 handed. Those were super tough to get in Canada. I had to jump through multiple flaming hoops from the distributor to ultimately an end of the road retail store willing to ship them overseas to me.

Does anyone know the reasoning for the different Charge model naming? TTi, Ti, XTi, AL etc...

I'll take a stab at it.

Ti - Titanium scales
XTi - Titanium scales, extra bit driver
AL - Aluminum scales
ALX - Aluminum scales, extra bit driver
TTi - ?
SLV - ?

But the Capt is right... they are all different so we all need at least one of each :D

Thanks for the responses. I know they're all different and the cap crimper thing. I just didn't know what each model name stood for as bdAmmo explained.
