Stupid slotted driver on the can opener....
on: January 26, 2011, 03:32:52 AM
So I've been carrying  a PPP as primary EDC for over half a year now, I love the pliers, but the implements leave something to be desired.

One, the tools don't lock, and while I normally don't mind, the ones on the PPP close much easier than those on say, a SAK.

The awl is backwards. For some reason, I always use the awl in a way that makes it want to close.

The super weak small flathead on the can opener. I twisted it clean off today trying to loosen a screw on an electrical connector today.

Overall, while I'm tempted to go back to my Blast, I really love the compound leverage and the one hand butterfly opening. While I keep considering upgrading to my Powerlock, I just really love the size of the PPP. As with all multi's, guess I"m stuck in another compromise.

What would solve my problems? A locking PPP

The Powerlock has the same small flathead, so upgrading won't really help there. But a locking PPP would be nice. Well actually a locking PT-510.

This is the exact reason my  Powerlock went out of EDC.  Pliers are great, other tools are too "bendy".

I've been toying with the idea of making a beefier mini-driver, with a longer shank, more like the LM ones.

I honestly haven't had any problems with any of the tools on my PL, but then again I haven't had it for very long.

I'm thinking that too...but am unsure what steel to use/where to get it.

The pliers are great but the handles hurt me when using the drivers.

I hear what you're saying about folding.  No issue using my SAK as a driver but have had PT-510 tools fold up in use :(
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

I would think something in the 400 series would be more than fine, maybe some of this stuff?

Maybe just for fun I'll try making one out of titanium  :D

+1

The only SOG I've seen that this doesn't describe is my old Paratool (thanks GG!).  The in-handle tools seem much stronger than the current ones, and the plier handles are WAY more comfortable than the PPP without needing those flappy covers.

In regards to the slotted driver on the can opener...  Why did SOG change this?  My Paratool has the combo can opener/caplifter with no driver, like Leatherman,  instead of separate opener tools ala Vic, as SOG does it today.  Was this done to squeeze just one more flat screwdriver into the tool?  It seems to me that the old way gives you more robust drivers.

BTW, I believe all the SOG awls I've seen are "backwards".
