My Ranger has lost it's "snap"...
on: February 22, 2011, 11:38:18 PM
Hi all!
As I said in the title, my Ranger, which I've only had a couple of months, has lost it's snap on the bottle opener side.  I've cleaned it the best I know how, got down in there as far as I can....just let it go or is there something I can do about it?  Thanks guys!

Looks like a spring problem,Gray. Your's got a soft spring. Is it covered by warranty?

Is it both the bottle opener and can opener, or just the bottle opener?

If it's just the bottle opener then I'd guess there's just something sticky in there, work it back and forward in warm soapy water and then a touch of 3-in-1 oil.

If it's both openers then, as Teo suggests, it's very possibly the spring, though I've not heard of the happening to such a new SAK.

If it's a soft spring, my experience is, Wenger is EXCELLENT in repair and replace.  :tu:

I totally forgot to mention that the scissors have also been affected...really the whole knife. I guess I should just send it in. Will it have to go overseas or does Vic have some place stateside that can fix it? Other than it just not having that snap it still works fine. Am I being too picky? :) thanks guys!

Well, try cleaning and oiling it first. The snap may return :)

In Mr Whippy's defence I wasn't sure which Ranger we were talking about either. :)

A much overlooked mid-sized SAK, and one I really should pick up again (the last one I had somehow became "parts"  :-[).

I really like it a lot!  Even without the "snap" it's a solid very well rounded 4 layer SAK.  Nice tool compliment, corkscrew for the eyeglass driver...nice little knife and it was a birthday present.  :)

The Vic Ranger is one of my favorites.  :tu:

I'm sure Vic service will sort it out if that's what it takes.  It's very odd for Vic springs to go soft though...

I'll give it another scrubbing and see if it helps...if not, I'll decide whether or not to send it off.  All the tools stay closed as of right now.  Hope it stays that way.  I really like this knife.

Exactly.  It's just one thin layer thicker than the Huntsman, but you gain several tools.

metal file
"nail file" (fine file)
metal saw
fine screwdriver
chisel

am I forgetting anything?

That's right!
I think every model with a saw should have the fine screwdriver (or chisel) :)
