I was genuinely impressed with this thing, though it wasn't really quite as near to setting light to my coat as it looks. :D

In my slightly fuzzy memory it was going for about an hour and a half or so, but I'll be the first to admit I wasn't paying that much attention. :-[

I think I'll try making one of those.
Now all I need is a few candles and a tin can with a lid...

I remember thinking two things ...

A) That's going really well
B) Don't trip over it and set your trousers on fire when you go for a pee

I don't think I've ever seen canning supplies in grocery stores here.  :(

What do you need. I have plenty of stuff lying around. Just pm me a list and I'll see what I have.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

I was thinking that the tin is probably the hardest thing to find when making one of these

So I cut down a beer can (no beer was wasted during the filming of this thread)
Filled it with some cardboard
Then topped it up with melted candle wax, less than four candles this time  ;)

That seems to work OK  :tu:

My house smells funny

One part Yankee Candle and two parts unscented candles would work nicely, I bet. :tu:

You could always add marigold flowers to it also. This is a natural mozzie repellent.

I made one yesterday with some big blue candles my mom threw out an hour before I asked her if she had any unused candles.
I had to go dumpster diving in our trash can.
I used an 11 cm high tomato sauce can. I know it's too high but I wanted to see how a higher can works.

It will be tested later this week.

Bring a fire truck :P

EDIT:
Here are the promised action shots:

It lit right up after a few seconds in contact with a match.

The flames spread throughout the candle after about a minute.

I put it out after about 10 minutes with the green metal lid that can be seen in the pictures.
All in all I am impressed with the simplicity, performance and the price of this thing.

I really want to top it off because I didn't have enough wax at the time.
Maybe when I get a chance to use it I will have some wax ready to throw in

I've decided they'd be fun to do with my boys at Halloween.  I figure they can make one each to go either side of the pumpkin.

Tony sent me appropriate supplies over.  We were going to wait for Halloween but as school was closed today it seemed as good a time as any.

We made them in the afternoon and then waited until after Cubs this evening for the testing.  The lads decided that although it wasn't a camp fire it'd be a good excuse to eat marshmallows anyway :D

They burnt well but were a little tricky to get going.  Probably startup easier next time.

I didn't realize you had decorated them with sprinkles,  :) Did you heat the wax on the cooker or use something else?

Heated it with an electric hot air gun.

Apparently the way to do it without fuss and odour is to use a baby bottle warmer.

I just put the wax in a tin can and boiled it in a small pot until it melted.

More pictures, courtesy of my eldest...

Very windy this evening and they burnt out in about an hour.  During that time they put out loads of light and made a very satisfying roaring noise :)

Additional pics with pumpkin here.

Very cool.... now I want to make one too. Don't think I'll ever find a use for it but it looks like a fun rainy Sunday project.
