Had a Timex Sinclair 1000 back in the day....with the 16Kb upgrade. My father had issues with the memory module crashing the computer, so he devised a metal clamp that would hold the upgrade to the back of the computer. I do not miss the tape deck storage.  :D

The days of typing in programs from magazine listings on that hideous keyboard, only for it not to work.

Or loading up a game, waiting through ten minutes of flashing coloured bars and wee-aah noises only to see R Tape loading error come up  ::)
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

I had a PC running dos when I was about 3.
I still remember typing this:
"cd games"
"cd stunts"
"stunts"
:D

Broderbunds Stunts (or 4D Sports Driving).
It can be found as freeware on the internet.
Best game ever!

Yeah, I loved my C64... and then my bestfriend got a Commodore Amiga and I was sooo jealous.

Many years later, I bought a more modern PC... it was a 486/66mhz, 4mb RAM (upgradable to 20mb), 460mb harddrive, no CD-rom, 14.4k modem.  I thought it was the best computer ever and that I would never have to buy upgrade or buy another computer ever again.  lol

For years I dreamed about having a PC like that. I was stuck running an 8086 based PC at 8mhz, no HD, twin floppy drives and mono screen.

How times have changed.

This whole thread is making me want to find an old Macintosh all-in-one to make into an aquarium.  I typed a lot of papers on those old monochrome bricks.

My college orientation class included a lot of stuff about the internet.  The "internet" being Archie searches and Gopher lookups, with what web browsing we did being through Lynx.  You really don't know from horrible until you try and browse a website in a text-only browser.  Also, some time was spent playing MUDs on green-screened Unix dumb terminals until I decided that such activity was even too dorky for *me*.

I'm fairly sure that the "ancient" laptop in the OP has more horsepower than my current desktop :)

Actually, Lynx is still around, with it's latest stable release being half a year ago; I was eying it two weeks ago, contemplating trying it out. >.>

[Edit:  Crap, I just found Zork I-III online as freeware downloads... I know what I'll be doing in my off hours this summer. >.>;]

As far as Lynx goes...you go boy.  I'm not ashamed to leave that particular bit of the web behind me :)

Gopher, on the other hand, still has something equating to elegance about it.  It originated the "gopher hole" syndrome that most people equate with Wikipedia now.  I can remember getting on some interrelated Gopher servers and reading docs that lead to more docs for hours.

I think I still have one of those old all-in-one Macs in my loft  :ahhh  In a giant carry case that looks a bit like a thermal picnic holder :D

Are they worth anything yet

Never did MUDs. the closest I got was messing around once on the VAX chat system.  Once because I realised half the people using it were in the same bloody room ::)  Eh, hello... you can talk you know ::)

I do remember using gopher to raid the Psion archives at one of universities in London.  So much software, so fast and not enough floppy discs :D
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

I have one of those collecting dust in my basement.  Someone gave it to me years ago but I never got around to using it.  :-[
