Bantam or Waiter?
on: March 05, 2011, 02:00:57 PM
Rick kindly gave me this little knife last year.  The question is, is it a Bantam or with it being alox is it a Waiter?   I dunno

I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

I believe that it was know as a Waiter.  Sure I've seen it in a old catalogue under that name anyway.  I'll need to go check now. ::)

I need to have my eyes checked...  I thought the title read: "Batman or Waiter".  ???

Anyways, I say it's a bantam.

Not a waiter. I have 2. It has the combo tool and the corkscrew. From the looks of it, it's not a bantam either since the bantam is the same thing without the corkscrew. Hope that helped.
Edit: It might be an old waiter. The older versions of the current waiter were called the bartender because there was already a knife called the waiter in production at the time

It's a 0.1300 (it's official Victorinox name). Unofficially at the time it was called a Waiter. The modern "collector name" would be "alox bantam"

This is from the mid 1970s, back before Victorinox really became consistent with the names. Different regions would give the knives different names for whatever reason they wanted it seems. Many of these names were usually consistent, but some were not, and some evolved to be associated with other knives.

I used to have a ribbed one 0.1300. Its the smoothness that throws up the question ;)

I'm guessing the smooth version was never available through retail channels and only for advertising.

Ribbed one is a 0.1300.26. And you're right, it was almost certainly an advertising knife exclusively. In which case it most likely didn't even have a name, just a Vic stock number.
