Best use I've personal had was removing the metal grill from my hot grill.  Can't remember what I dropped... probably a small piece of chicken or something and I wanted to fish it out but obviously didn't want to grab the hot metal with my fingers.  The hooked worked perfectly.

The best use I'd heard though was the guy who dropped his glasses in the toilet and didn't want to reach in with his fingers...
