Best "Long" Self-Defense Knife
on: March 13, 2011, 08:14:20 AM
I'm looking for a decently long self-defense knife.
I also want one that is affordable, but still acceptable.
I would just store it under my bed.

I really don't know where to start to look for one.

I saw this and thought it might work.
the reviews are good.

If you just want a big honking knife, I'd say go to walmart and get a coghlan's machete. You'll need to sharpen it yourself, but once you do it's a good performer, and it's $15. I've never chopped anything other than wood with mine, but it goes through them very well.

When stainless steel knives get long and not properly tempered you get this:

Dollar for dollar, you want a Cold Steel Magnum Kukri Machete:

It'll run you $20-30, is virtually indestructable and you won't feel too bad dumping it with the body somewhere.

As sugested most cheap machetes, e.g. Marbles (around 10 dollars from online auctions) will do, provided you don't try stabbing something, or, since you will not be carrying it with you, you may be better off with a baseball bat / hockey stick / metal pipe etc. which are also safer for you when you pick them up in the dark.

What gets me about that video everytime I see it is nobody is making an effort to
go over and help the chap, cameraman keeps on rolling and panning, and somebody
steps in to save the day narrating.  All in all though I'm sure if you called right away
they'd have thrown in a second one for free.

Anyhow, not to derail the OP's original question, if your tucking it under your bed and
leaving it there, there are so many choices.  Kukri, small sword, longer knife, cold steel,
sog, kershaw make some good quality brands.  Even a "Saw" double edged, hunter version,
say in a cordura sheath is a good defensive choice ,affords a good grip, you can hack and
swing at an attacker and no one sure as hell will attempt to grab it, then when the law
arrives you can just let them know about your home invasion and you just happened to
have this saw handy.  Doesn't raise as many eyebrows.  :D
If your taking it out of house then of course comforable carry becomes a bit more of an
issue.
