Changing the bevel on a Micra blade
on: May 07, 2011, 10:14:15 PM
The Micra comes with a chisel grind on the blade.  I'm not a fan of chisel grinds because they seem to be a little fragile.

The used Micra that I picked up has a dull blade so now might be a good time to add a bevel to the flat side of the blade.

Is there any reason that I should not change the Micra blade to a double bevel instead of staying with the original chisel grind?

I say go for it. I can't see a reason why not to.

It'll take a little bit of work mate but I don't see a reason not to do it.

Back when the Micra came out, Leatherman freely admitted that the only reason for the chisel grind was for cost savings (it helped to offer a high quality steel tool, at a low price).

The cool thing is that you don't have to re-profile the edge all at once, you can let it happen naturally each time you sharpen it. Just sharpen the bevel side normally, and instead of smoothing the slightly rolled edge on the flat slide, sharpen it at the same angle just until you have a good edge. (This, of course, is assuming that the ascetics of uneven bevels don't bother you...)
