SOG Paratool, Still Relevant or Obsolete??
on: June 05, 2010, 12:37:07 AM
Hey guys,
Just thought I'd post to see if anyone still uses their Paratool. It was cool especially with the ease of disassembly and blade upgrade, it was a very cool tool to use in the 1990's but with the advent of the LM wave and other locking drivers, it looks like the Paratool has taken its rightful place in SOG MT history..

Mine is in a display case next to my Issue Case Kabar and custom sheath.. When I was in the US Army, I never went anywhere without either of the two..

Cheers,
Serge

I have a BO and a chrome version and carry them both in rotation. Being in the UK (land of non-locking tool laws) it makes excellent EDC for me. I also think they are a really unique design :)

I don't think you can really call any tool "Obsolete," I mean a rock is still a useful tool.  But I don't see anything that is dated or worthless on the Paratool, aside from the head which I've read could be better.  that said it is on my want list

I never could get comfortable with that ParaTool side-folding plier head design. :-\ It just doesn't feel secure to me for some reason, so I never EDC'd it. :(

I came across one of these in very decent condition for $70 today (Not a totally unreasonable price, by Aussie Multi standards, but more than I'd ever pay...maybe. SOGs are a rarity in my experience.)
and feel that it'd be very useful.

Plenty of people still carry Slippies, SAKs, or Supertools, so there's no shame in two-hand opening blades, and the paratool has neat, OHO Pliers, and as a double up - nice handles to hold, and all the tools are interchangable with other SOG offerings (a feature that, when Leatherman brings it out, will be considered the best thing since guilt-free sex).

Okay, no designer steels or handle inlays, but as functional as can be, and in a neat little package.

I really like the Paratool. Since I first tried one on IWA 2009, I wanted one. I really think that SOG tools are underrated, they are at least as good as LM products, and very high value tools.

There is no such thing as an obsolete multi-tool.  :D

The Paratool does have some interesting design features that are unique to it, and much like Bob, I could never get a handle on it to comfortably carry it as an EDC.

When I got one 10 years or more I thought it was so innovative. Now I think it could use an update, at least to the pliers. They are needle nose but the tip is too bulky for needle nose.

There was a 64mb version of the Swiss Memory. I would call that obsolete.

That is a lot of word-processing files...so depends on what you need it for.

I've had mine over 15 years and it's never failed me in any task that I've needed to use it for :salute:, so for me it remains relevant and functional. And also living in the U.K. the fact it's non locking means it's on the right side of the law and therefore in my pack.

i took mine on a trip to edc new caledonia as it was a lot lighter than my powerlock.
I like the 'plier-angle-ness' of it the most. It now lives permanately in my cars tool rool... only comes out for car trouble or when i need something because i left the powerlock at home :)

The update i would be pushing for is locking implements  :gimme:
