Got liquorice?
on: May 30, 2011, 03:47:02 PM
I've recently gotten to appreciate the taste of liquorice.  Anybody here love liquorice?  It seems like our friends from Europe have a wider selection to choose from than the US.  What's your favorite?

+1. And that's unusual for me to say, seeing my usual outlook on candy  :).

Never got any I liked. But I heard there are dozens of varieties in northern Europe, maybe they have better stuff there :)

Just plain old black stuff for me.  I gotta admit though that I haven't had any in a long time.

I prefer the red licorice.

Bassets Maynards Allsorts is my downfall though.

+1 on the chocolate bullets. I also like black and red licorice. @ Multimat, I know coles sells red licorice, in the brown  paper bag style packaging. Have you tried that one?

Black licorice...

I like all licorice, but the soft black rope licorice is my favorite.

A lot of cheap licorice has a plasticky aftertaste (I still like it though  ::)), but good quality licorice is one of my favorites.

My kids don't really care for it, although my daughter will eat some red licorice on occasion.

The Dutch are crazy about licorice, or as they call it, drop, with the highest per capita consumption of licorice in the world (almost 4 1/2 pounds per person per year) giving the Dutch drop market a total value of $225,157,500.

I have tried a few but none are the same as what I had as a kid  :( :( :(. The stuff I loved was 3 shoe strings of liquorice stuck together & it came in green , red & maybe cola colors/flavors  . It was a softer liquorice & we used to pull the 3 pieces apart & eat them one at a time  :dd: :dd: :dd: , ahh happy days  :D :D :D :D

Looks like I'm in small company.   Will be on the hunt for the ones that have been mentioned.  Dare I say that I want to try chewing on these liquorice roots?

My Uncle has spent his entire working life making Bassetts Liquorice Allsorts  :D. I like the traditional stuff (Bertie Bassett stuff), but not so keen on the red /fruity version (Betty Bassett stuff). As for chewing the root - tried it once as a kid .... never again!!!

Yeah  :D, a vaguely liquorice flavoured highly fibrous twig - no wonder they're so popular  :P

that really does sum it up quite well. :D

IIRC it's a softer flavour which I quite liked, unfortunately I was given some to try by a friend and I've no idea where she got it from.

I found some roots here:  http://www.liquorice-licorice.co.uk/italian-liquorice-roots-x-1-box-zlq3428-85-p.asp

Claims it's the old fashioned variety.

I see people here talking about 'black licorice' as if there is only one or two variates of that.
As a Dutch person, I can safely say, there's tens if not hundreds of different variates of that stuff alone, here in Holland.
Gotta love muntendrop ! [hard and sweet]
