I guess I'm a heretic. I actually
like high-tech steels, but I think ZDP-189 is a bad choice for a knife like this. ZDP-189 requires a blunt edge angle (let the flamewar commence), and a SAK is so much nicer with a somewhat acute edge angle you know you can touch up in no time at all. If I should go for a high-carbide steel in a SAK I'd at least prefer something less brittle and more user-friendly like RWL-34. Steels like ZDP-189 truly excel on abrasive resistance, but what's the point when you can't have an acute edge angle? I talked to a metallurgist friend of mine (PhD in tool steel, actually): I wondered whether he knew anything about ZDP-189. He admitted limited detailed knowledge, but commented given the composition, if it wasn't somewhat brittle it would revolutionize what we know about steel. (No, I have no knives in ZDP-189, and if I had, I couldn't afford testing them for toughness and ductility.
) On the other hand, this is a small knife, and then brittleness is less of an issue, at least. Sorry, I'm rambling...
