Wtb rivet tool
on: June 23, 2011, 05:17:12 AM
Like the title says I need a rivet tool to do alox scale rivets. It needs to be concave with a concave base also. Or please point me in the right direction. Thanks.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

I've had no real success with doing alox like that :(   So far, best results seem to be just going carefully with a ball peen hammer.

If money is no object you want an orbital riveter.  And if money really is no object could you grab one for me as well please :P
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Could we have a pass-around then? :pok: :D

Actually the pass around idea sounds like a good idea. If enough people were interested it could make it cheap enough to buy.

We could get Grant to set up a "special fund" thread for all members to contribute. Then if we had a machine like that then at a business and mod standpoint it would have limitless possibilities.

Even old beat up second hand orbital riveters cost hundreds to thousands.  Compare that to a couple of pounds for a ball pean hammer and you can see why I don't own one.

For most traditional knifemaking they're superfluous anyway as the handle finish is done last after riveting. But for something where you don't want to mess up the surrounding area, like alox SAKs, it's the perfect tool.

Perhaps I'll find one at a car boot sale some day  :dd:

Like I said in another thread, here is the tool you need. The aircraft rivet squeezer.

Together with the dies it will cost aprox $200.

There are some cheaper ones, $100 -$150. No need to buy the best.

I have quite a few links if you are interested. But you need to contact the manufacturers for advice for the right dies/squeezer set.

I've done my research and I know this is the ticket.

You have to use solid rivets which already have a head on the one end or make your own rivet with one round head with a piece of a brass rod and a ball peen hammer.

Then all you have to do is to assemble your new SAK and sweeze with the right dies and you have perfect rivets all the time.

I wanted to buy that tool but it's not worth paying that much for total 4 or 5 mods in a mod career.

That would be easier to pass around or just keep handy in the shop. Mmmm I wonder if I could make one.

It looks like they are designed to apply a LARGE amount of compression force. That must be the key to getting the rivet head to form...?

If it works well then its not a bad investment (the children can eat bread for a month  >:D ).

However, if it it isn't suitable for the task then its a lot of money to go wrong with.

I've tried a few "homebrew" items in the past and even tried the rivet spinners that go in your pillar drill.  So far nothing has held a candle to a ball peen hammer.

We need someone with slightly deeper pockets than me to give it a go first :)

ok ball peen hammer it is. How long should I leave the rivets on the end to get the proper flare?

Depends how you want the rivet to look when done but 1 to 1.5mm proud of the surface.
