Thoughts on Atwoods?
on: November 28, 2007, 12:49:33 AM
Just wondering what general opinions people here have on Atwood tools? I've never had or carried one (or seen one ::) )...

Also, what do you think of this one in particular? There's a few others like it on the main home page as well.

Waaaay too expensive IMO.  What can these tools do that a $5 CountyComm pry bar can't?  Or a SAK for that matter?

They also look too small to apply any real leverage, and too small to hammer.

We had a similar thread a month or so ago.  I really like the Atwood tools even though they're expensive.  The one you have pictured is new to me, but it looks pretty cool!

Must have missed that one. I personally think they look great, though they seem a little pricey, so I'm interesed in hearing how they've worked out for those that have them?

Also, I just saw that new tool for the first time and was wondering if anyone knows how well it works? ???

let's face it: we're all gadgeteers at one level or another.

these "tools" just happen to be the quintessential gadgets.

i would have them all if i could. on a BIG jailers key ring.

and jing-a-ling i would go....

you know, looking at his stuff more, they do have that certain pride and tough look about them,
he is a craftsman. He's in a business and his price is probably directly related to his labor and research and tooling,
plus it looks like he really makes em last.

I like, I really do but I can not afford a 140 dollar prybar! But if you can, god bless and
god bless us all everyone!

My wife ended up buying a G2 mini prybaby for me for Christmas.  I was going to order one and she decided to take it upon herself to get one for me.  I liked that little tool from the moment I first seen it.  On Dec 25th, it will be mine, all mine.  Then I can put it to good use :drink:     opening bottles.

I think they're expensive and limited in use, but hey what do I know.  :) I made my own mini-pry from a small pry bar found at Ace. Coupled with the Core or Vic Spirit I EDC, I can't see a need to carry anything else.

i see them as moderately useful and really overpriced.  i know many folks on many boards that love them.  i had one briefly to test and review and thought it was less than useful.  just too small and short to be much more than a really expensive wedge.

They are just status symbols, and as such are just fine.

I always liked them from afar, would I ever get one no, there too expensive by half despite the quite beautiful lines, there really not that functional due to there tiny size :(

It is an interesting concept though, the whole tacticle prybar has quite a few possible uses, so I hope it continues to be developed :)

Yes I own 3 tools . One Keyton and 2 prybars ( small and large ) we all know about the price but once you
get your first it's hard to say it was a bad Idea....some tools could be more used than others but in my
case the Regular prybars do the job fine.....

So give a try and see what do you think.....

I like them for a few reasons.  I shoot a lot so I can use it to remove a stuck case from the chamber of a .22 easily.  It is more convenient to use the tool for sight adjustments because there is no opening/closing to accomplish this.  I open a lot of bottles :drink:.  I also play a lot of golf and it is easy to use the tool to repair pitch marks and clean the grooves on my clubs.  As an actual prying tool I believe that it can do the job but it is a little short for major prying.  However, if I would clamp down with the plier jaws I could pry a lot of stuff without carrying a true pry bar.

So a Crunch and Prybar sounds like a winning team! :D

So no one's heard anything on the one with the bit driver... Oh well, I guess I'll have to wait and see if they catch on. :)

I was thinking that exactly.  A crunch paired with the atwood.  The model with the bit driver is pretty new I guess.  For me it would handle all the tasks that I use my multitool for anyway.  The Prybaby will fill that gap that cannot be filled with the normal array of tools that I carry now without breaking or damaging one.

That new one would also carry a bit that could be put in the Crunch's handle for harder use. :)

we need to stop thinking of them as "tools" and acknowledge what they really are: pieces of miniature sculpture.

then the cost doesn't seem so dear as we are supporting an artist.

"sculpturettes" has a nice ring. the man is a dedicated craftsman.

Well, then I say it's a very reasonably priced item... Most things that make a person cultured cost quite a bit more and are quite a bit less useful. :D

They are useful to some but not for all.  I guess.  For example, I have a use for the tool that I like.  You may have no use at all for the same tool.  For me the model with the bit is almost completely useless, but for a guy that is tightening and adjusting with the same size bit day in and day out it amy be a godsend.

They are little works of art in their own special way.  A guy made somthing functional that would fill a small market gap and I guess that you could say that it was a success for the most part.  Try selling a steel bottle opener to your wife for $30 and see how she responds. :) :twak:

$150 might lead you to going missing if you buy it without first consulting the wife.

I've not even seen an Atwood in the flesh, but I know I need several at least :D I especially like the Bottlebug in the first post. Alas, being on the dole & skint means it's not gonna happen just yet, so I make do with one of these;

and an old Victorinox blade on my keyring;

The Vic. blade was found while metal-detecting (hence the characterful covering of crap), so total cost was £3.50...  :D

Still wanna Prybaby though :P
