Drive socket adaptor on PowerLock
on: July 03, 2011, 04:01:31 AM
Today I went to my local Ace Hardware Store, and bought a 1/4" bit coupler to use with my PowerLock.  After returning home from running other errands, I noticed the wire spring on the PowerLock's driver was missing (apparently it came off when trying the coupler inside the store).  Without the spring, the coupler is useless.  I sent SOG an email about this, and hopefully I can just get the spring without buying the entire component.  When the new part arrives, is there any way to make sure that this does not happen again (other than by not using it)?  This seems like a very poor design, and I am surprized SOG did not design this better.

This is somewhat a common problem.  I've never had any problems with the spring on my Powerlock but a few guys on here have.  If you bend the spring more, it should have a snugger fit and won't fall off.

Thanks for the response!  When/If I get my replacement spring, I'll try bending it and see if it works.  Have a good one.

I replaced the spring on one of my Powerlocks with a piece of paperclip. Just cut it and bent it to fit the adapter. Works great.

I personally contacted SOG a few times about the same problem and never got a single reply  >:(

50ft-trad;

I haven't heard back from SOG, either (maybe a phone call would work better).  I really like the paper clip idea (many thanks S. Grossman!);  I'll try that, and if it doesn't work out, I'll give them a call.

I noticed that the adaptor does not have any holes or other method for keeping the spring attached to it (other than a small groove along the "head" of the adaptor).  I wonder if an adhesive were used to keep the spring in place would affect its performance.

When I contacted them about this problem they sent me a couple of them free of charge. If I remember correctly

I just got off the phone with a very nice lady at SOG, who took my information and is sending out a replacement spring (no charge).  I asked if there was something that could be done to the part to reduce the chances of it coming off again;  The lady told me that she didn't know of anything that could be done, and cautioned that if the spring is put on too tight the holder will not work.

Thanks to all who responded!

I phoned four times today only to be told each time the guy I needed to speak to wasn't at his desk  :-\
Glad you got yours sorted though mike

I just received my replacement spring today.  If anyone is needing this part, the item number is: "TSAS" and the part description is:  "Spring for 1/4 In Dr".
