As long as it's rugged , well built and reliable , and has enuff output for the job ; who cares . For a work/EDC , 60 lumens is more than enuff ; as long as beam quality is all there .

My all time fave . EDC ( now semi retired , as they aren't made now ) , is a McLux III PD , and an ARC AA .

I agree

After using my Surefire LX2 as an EDC for a time, I've found that even 15 lumens is plenty bright when the light is designed to throw it well.

There were a few guys on candlepowerforums who shared their experiences with their lights during blackouts after the hurricane in the US, where they found their 300+ lumen fun lights were too bright to the point where they were obnoxious, and that the ones that were most effective were the ones with the long runtimes that put out enough light for you to see where you were walking.

The Fenix PD20 seems to have a good mix of options for my daily needs, others I have and like are Quark Mini (?) Ti S2 and Preon Revo .... and recently upped my DX mini V (or whatever the big 500lm Lumapower thing I've got is) to 18650 or 16850 (or whatever that big daft rechargable battery is that goes in them when the longer tube is fitted) ... no I don't visit CPF and no I haven't got the faintest clue about torches or batteries is anything remotely connected ....

... BUT ....

I'm still a big fan of the paclite that clips on the end of a 9v battery.
Excellent little back up light, night light, camping light.

"The torch with the power of a million candles" is not always best option as far as I'm concerned

warning slightly adult language. :D

While I do like to have the option of a brighter light I've also managed on much lower light levels just fine.  Remember, up until relatively recently most folks were (and many still are) perfectly happy with the output of a Mini-maglite. :)

I guess it's a lot like guns , some guys want the super whizbang magnum de jour , others like Moi , are happy with tried an true classics like the .270 , .30-06 , or .308 .

For a lot of years , I got it done with a MiniMag , all was groovy till I discovered the Surefire 6P .

Two levels is kinda nice , I could live quite happily with between 5 and 10 on low , and 60 on high .

Gotta admit , I like the short body lengths CR123's provide .

I walk in Manhattan parks every night with my dog and while I don't need a super powerful light to find my way around, the 180 lumens from my Fenix LD20 does come in handy for scaring off brazen racoons that won't get out of the path. When I first got the flashlight I was playing around with it in the park when off to the side I hear some voices and turn the light, on high, towards them. I scared the crap out of two crack smokers. They were like deer in headlights, frozen solid. I kept walking and 20 feet later I hear one of them curse, "Yo, you dropped the smurfin' rock" ::)

I also agree that the better lights are the ones with a long run time and that are bright enough to use without being able to blind jet pilots.
How much light does the human eye actually need in order to see in the dark?

60 lumens is plenty & then some for EDC or a work light. I have a couple in 50 & 60 lumens. It works for me.

I've just dug out my LM Monarch 300 and, despite it's mere 16 lumen, I can still somehow find my way around a dark room!  How does that work!? :ahhh

 ;)
