Just picked up a PST. Just wanted to let you all know :)

- I got stooged on the price ($150 AU). Probably should have shopped online - could of got less than that inc. Shipping most likely.

Oh well, what's done is done, and now for my next trick I will compare my new $150 PST with a $16 GI PST(Identical tool selection, shape etc)

At the end of the day it's only money :D, besides you'll forget how much you've paid for it once you've had a play with it :)

Look forward to hearing about your comparison mate :)

I've just discovered that I am now the (proud? PO'd?) owner of two PSTs, because the genius managed to put a PST in the PST II box.

On one hand - mistakes happen, on the other hand - Jerk.

Does that actually say "Leathervan" or is that just a trick of the light?  :D

I would think an original "typo PST" would be worth a small fortune!

Taking the market by storm I see. - My Leatherman, dated '02, has only half-depth "V" in the "M". Unless I grind it out completely and restamp, I can't join your club.

To drag this topic painfully back on topic

 - First test was Appearance - To the casual observer they are identical in form (The GI model lacks any markings, though it does have "Stainless" on the blade)

The knobs on the GI are larger, and the ends of the handles ground more Oval than round - It's hard to pick any single fault, but the overall look is one of a bulkier, less precision tool.

Second Test was Hard Wire cutting - I used a 2.5mm Steel wire - About the same thickness as Clotheshanger wire, but of a higher, and harder grade.

With two hands, and a world of pain I was able to cut it with the GI (in a spout of masochism, I cut it again) - after just two cuts there was obvious damage to the tool and my poor, girly hands.

With one hand, and slightly less pain, I easily snipped with the PST, hacking the wire into half a dozen pieces before getting bored.

Advantage: PST.

Will post pictures of tools, and damage to the GI tonight.

Test Three is Tool Access (since I can do this sitting down)

The GI has more washers to prevent clumping, and seems to perform better than the PST in this respect (though some Spraylube may make the PST nice)

The GI Phillips (recessed to accomodate Plier head when folding) has a box shape at the base, making it reachable without taking out the Can opener first. Other than this, all other tools are reached with similar levels of ruining my manicure.

Advantage: GI

Hi Benner,

Looks like have a very nice early PST with the second type (headed) rivets, drop point blade nail nick, straight  medium and phillips screwdrivers and single hatched fine file.  Nice find - congrats - this is a shelf queen, not a user from a collector's standpoint.

More on these soon - Joe

Thanks, but it was supratentorial that did all the hard work. :)

And don't worry it won't be used for anything, no matter how desparate.  ;)

Unfortunately it was just bad lighting.  Here's a better photo that I took this morning before shipping it.

Depends on the collector - some would say an item ain't about what it is made of, it's only worth its history.
Would you rather a 200 year old table, or a 200 year old table that survived the battle of Trafalgar?

Onto my haggard topic -

Test four was Cutting - The easiest expendable thing at hand was some heavy-duty cardboard boxes. Both knives shredded several sheets with equal ease, but as we know - almost all knives are sharp on the first date, so I'll perform a Test 4a (and perhaps even a B and C) to see how they stand up to prolonged use against progressively tougher material.

Advantage: Tie

Test five is bottle opener - back in a sec.

Rightio - The PST gently and smoothly popped the top while the GI punctured the lid.

This makes me particularly interested to try the Can Opener next.

Advantage: PST
