ST300 / MUT Replacement Cutter Carry Suggestions
on: August 05, 2011, 02:01:35 AM
Thinking about carrying a replaceable cutter set (inserts, screws, tool) in my EDC, and wondered if anyone had any suggestions for a small durable container. Something other than a little plastic bag, that is.

Thanks

Thats a pretty good idea TS, espcially if you use the cutters alot. I cannot think of any cases off the top of my head but how about using duck tape, stick the screws, tool and cutters to it and fold the duck tape over on itself. Should fit nicely in the sheath. Of course the duck tape would be one time use probably but easily replaced. Not very elegant but it may work as a cheap solution.

That is an excellent idea Colin. Small, light weight, but still tough and substantial. Not limited to a particular size or shape either. Very good idea  :tu:

Only problem that I can see with this is that depending on how long the replacement parts were in the duct tape, they would probably end up with stickly adhesive residue on them when it came time to take them out.  My suggestion would be wrap the parts with a small piece of plastic wrap (or put them in a tiny plastic baggie) before putting them into the duct tape.  That would keep the tape adhesive off the parts.

That is a good point Copilot. How about making a pocket out of duct tape instead so there is no residue left on the parts at all? I use this method to carry a spare AAA.

I was thinking the same thing. I'll make one tonight and take some pictures while I making it. Post tonight or tomorrow...

Just something quick and dirty. I'll eventually sit down with an X-ACTO knife and a straight edge and make something a little more precision:

I might have another idea, but it depends on your availabilty of those bag sealer that you find a supermarketss.

cut some thick plastic, flexible, maybe a fashionalbe plastic bag, to size. then use the press heater to seal the parts and you end up with a nice package.

as with the original solution of the duct tape, it is still a one time use affair, but no residue. you can also use a small foam insert to give it some stiffness.

kuddos to the god of duct tape as well, that darn thing has saved my read end quite a few times as well :)

Thanks

It's about 2/3 the size of of a regular LM bit holder, so it fits real well  :tu:

Good idea  :tu:  Along those lines, one of those home vacuum sealers would do the trick too.

One of the nice things about this design is that other than the inside "liner" of the pouch, the rest of the duct tape only makes contact in a "back-to-front" manner (like when it's on the roll). So as long as the surfaces are kept clean, it's very reusable.

After handling the pouch for a few hours, there are some design changes that I'm going to make in the next one:
  • Use a slightly longer piece of tape. This will afford a longer closure flap, the 1/4 inch one is slightly lacking
  • Make the inside liner as narrow as possible, while still allowing the torx tool to slide in and out easily. This will give more surface area to the side closure flaps (although this could be reinforced easily with one wrap of tape around the outside of the pouch)
  • Perhaps use a slightly lesser grade of duct tape. The one used in this prototype is "Gorilla" brand, it's very thick, and the adhesive is very strong and unforgiving. (Gorilla is famous for the strength of their adhesives)
