charge tti metal file
on: May 10, 2011, 01:19:43 AM
Hi all,
I just bought a charge tti..

On one side of the metal file (side facing inwards) has cross hatching and the side facing outwards is nearly smooth with a little texture / diamond coated.  The side facing outwards rubs up against the handle scale making a "nails against chalkboard" sound.  I assume this is a problem as it would eventually wear down the file and the scales.  Will loosening the torx screws a little fix this? And if so can you confirm the torx bit size I need to buy, I think its torx 10.

Thanks

This is a common problem with the Charge. I do not believe there is a fix, but someone will correct me if there is. It shouldn't really affect the tool's function though.

You could try that but you might end up with a 'floppy' file  .

Yep sadly it seems to be a common problem with the tti  :( :(.
If it really bugs you you could send it to Leatherman & hope the replacement does not have the same problem  .

I don't ever use files, and if I ever needed one I'd use a separate file. Odds are I might never open the file again.. I get compulsive about making things perfect but if it is the way its suppose to be then I'm fine.

Thanks for the replies.

That diamond file is pretty bloody handy mate  :pok: :pok: :D :D :D.

It is a shame Leatherman has not sorted the file rub issue , for some it is not a problem , me I reckon one of their premium models should be fault free.

I agree. Like I have read from others, I will need to adjust the torx screws so that the tools are easier to pull out. That requires an additional purchase.  A nice touch would be if leatherman included the torx wrenches with Waves and Charges etc. It couldn't add much cost, IKEA does it :) .

LM definitely does not encourage owner fiddling/adjusting their MTs.
The Torx fasteners they use are the security type , they have the post in the middle of the fastener.
So you need to buy 'special' Torx bits. Then there is those knurled as well fasteners.

In Leatherman's defence they do have a very good warranty service.

You can get round it by pushing the file down slightly when you close it. It works on mine.

I sent mine in and they sent me a good one.  How old is the Charge?  I am not sure, but I believe that Leatherman fixed the problem.

I realized the issue has to do with the liner lock pushing the file out toward the handle.  The same occurs with the blades and saw but since they do not have texture it doesn't have the same effect of "nails on chalk board" sound.  I also found that the looser the screws got the worse the problem because it allowed the liner lock to expand more.  With about 2 hours of tinkering I got my charge to work like a fine watch, with all the tools coming out very smoothly and the charge opening and closing very smoothly.

I was about to say this- a little pressure on the way home does the trick.
