Battle of SwisstTool Spirit X vs Wenger Traveler
on:
March 22, 2012, 04:54:31 AM
This morning I am trying to file down the nail file tip with the Spirit file so it could function as a small Hex screw driver. Oh man, the metal on the Wenger is so hard. After filing like 10 mins, I hardly can file down 1mm and I'm tired...
Anyone try to do this before?

Angle grinder is your friend for these things, go slow and have a water source to dip the file and cool it frequently

I went to buy a cheap diamond file, got it done in few minutes and I test it the result is good.
The file on the SwissTools funtion quite well smoothing out the edges though.

I recently bought this used and beat up, I cleaned it up and restored it. I do not mind used SAK as I have less reserve using them since they are already used and can get for very low cost.

This is the common Wenger Traveler, it is similar to the Victorinox Climber but I always rant about it not having a small screw driver as I work with Computer quite a bit. The Climber can opener function quite well as a small screw driver so I decided to mod it.

I love 84mm Victorinox because they are more portable and fit my hand better. However, there are currently no 84mm model that has sissors. Combo tools like the compact means I will lose the small screw driver on the dedicated can opener. The obvious choice would be the 91mm climber but Wenger Traveler fits my needs well. It is 85mm, smaller and lighter than climber. Now I have a very nice solution
the slim and longer nail file can reach spot better than the can opener too.

Yes, just regular diamond file sold in the hardware shop for few bucks. Took just a few minutes to file it down holding by bare hands. It was surprisingly easy, I might convert all my other nail files

I've been thinking about doing the same exact thing to my Evo16, but wasn't sure if it would work. Thanks for posting that, looks like I have a project for the weekend......

Go ahead, I find it works better than the one on my Vic Classic SD. Do post some photo for us

You just needed a different multitool. A Leatherman Wave/Charge has a diamond file.
The Leatherman diamond file is rather fine though which makes it great for fingernails and such. For the use you had, it might be too fine to work very fast, although it would do a smooth job. I just could not resist making the comment.
I wish my Spirit had one side of the file with diamonds. Then it would be perfect multitool for travel, since it will accept a corkscrew, unlike the Leatherman. After using the Spirit X a bit more, I do like it a lot, and could probably do without the convenience of the Leatherman's one handed blade operation, but I do miss the diamond file. The diamond file has gotten a lot of use.
A nice mod, although I find I use the tip of the fingernail file a good bit for very small Philips screws and sliding under staple ends to make removal easier without an unnecessary damage to the paper. Besides I like it for cleaning under my fingernails.
That is also a dilemma between the Classic and Classic SD. Of course with the Classic one has that small blade to use for cleaning under fingernails....as long as one doesn't slip it too far in...Ouch!

I do wish that my Spirit X has a diamond file too. As for the mod, it will clean nail just as fine too I also think that to use as small screw driver it just need to file a little bit to make it less pointy it will just do fine. I realise it comparing the LL Bean version og Wenger Traveler someone posted here yesterday. It has a small screw driver instead of nail file. I try it on hex screw, the nail file is just too tall to fit the slot so round it off a little bit on the tip will do. It will also clean nail just fine.
I file mine this way by following the width of SD, it will fit small flat head as well. I want it to use on computer servicing so with this and the small screw driver on the rambler/rally/mansger I have it covers what I need to take apart computer components
sweet. CyberTools not required.
