Well as far as shovel's go, the one I always use, when back packing, or going anywhere for an extented period is my Glock Shovel, I have no idea if there still in production any more, but I know they were made for the Austrian army in the 1990's :)

It's very well made and uses a lot of relatively high tech materials (plastics and polymers), the shovel head is slightly bigger and deeper than the US army equivalent, and because of the polymer shaft and alloy head you can dig for quite long periods without fatigue because the shaft damps out alot of the shock and vibration :), the edge's are beveled (not sharpened) so it can be used as a resonable effecient hatchet.

It can be used as a convetional shovel or rotate the head through 90 degrees and use it as a mattock, or pick :)

The the handle is tellescopic so you can use it in confined spaces or as a hand trowl, or extend it fully so you've got more leverage/power, the butt/pommel is nicely rounded so it doesn't chew your hands to bits either :)

But one of the best features is the screw off pommel the conceals a very effective wood saw and combo tool!
Just what every multinut needs :)

I've never been a fan of folding shovels myself.  Like anything else, I was probably ruined by cheap ones, but I like something solid.  I've been a big fan of the Cold Steel Special Forces shovel for some time:

It's small enough to hang from a pack, strap to the side of a kayak or canoe or simply keep in the trunk of your car for times when you need it.  The handle is solid and replaceable if necessary, and the steel is Cold Steel's Carbon V so you can put an edge on it to use it as a makeshift axe if need be.

I have one of Glock's bayonets that I found yesterday along with that silly Stab in the Dark knife.  I thought I had sold or traded it as well- it's funny that you should have brought it up today of all days!

I was never a fan of the field knife, but yeah a bit spookey :D

A cold steel spetznaz shovel is on the ever increasing 08 shopping list ::), but there very pricey for what they are on these shore's, and I'm not sure who the postage would be from the US ???

Considering the MSRP in the US of about $35, you could probably get one from one of our banner advertisers for a fraction of what they sell them there for if the same pricing ratios are kept!

I don't know if it qualifies as a multitool though.

I believe that I was told somewhere that Cold steels design was replicated from a Russian Spetnatz design . It was/is also called a throwing shovel much as a throwing knife .
I do not think that I would want to be on the receiving end of this item .
Yep, spetnaz used them as cqb weapon's and sadly against guard dogs >:(

It is indeed copied from the SPETZNAZ design.  I have met (and trained for a short period of timewith) Vladimir Vasiliev of the SPETZNAZ and while the shovel could be an impressive weapon, there are very few things (if anything) that isn't an imposing weapon in the hands of a trained SPETZNAZ officer!

The man can kick all of our arses with little more than the lint in his pocket!

all I've ever use is a Gator Digger that came with my metal detector years ago.
it really does the job though, digs through roots, rocks; sucker won't break
and has a lifetime guarantee! so I never got more fancy/tec ones.

I think he's meaning the ballistic knife.

Another one of those "good on paper..." type ideas!

Having handled one of them believe me they could be effective at what they were intended to . There was the serious drawback that they were rather dangerous to load/cock . Serious possibility of injuring the user .
That's why I never muched liked the idea, as it seemed to me, that there was as much chance of it biting the user as the intended target :D

Designers must have figured that the ones not careful in loading it did not deserve to play with thier toy .
:D, or were VERY careful second time round :D

I think you must have been ruined by cheap ones.  You really should look into the Swiss entrenching tools that Tim sells.  They are amazingly STOUT (but heavy).

I've been using the same US WWII entrenching tool for 20 years, and it has taken a hell of a beating.  However, I recently bought a Swiss one and the US e-tool pales in comparison.  I've seen those CS ones in person too, and I would put the Swiss e-tool up against it any time--except maybe if I was throwing it at a tree.

I might have to check one of those out.

There was a BuckMaster for sale on Knifeforums last week.  I don't know if it's still there ornot, but I've wanted one for a while too.  I just don't like the prices they ask for them!
