Standard Magnetic Bit holder modified for Leatherman
on: August 20, 2011, 01:09:01 AM
Having seen and read several videos and threads on modifying a standard magnetic bit holder for the Leatherman bit holder I decided to give it a try for myself.
I purchased a bit set from Screwfix for £4, one third the cost of the Leatherman bit extender plus I got 32 bits in a nice compact set.
Using a bench grinder I slowly ground down the bit holder into the shape of the Leatherman bit holder. Not as even or neat I would of liked but it fits into the holder ok and holds well. A bit of side to side movement is present but overall I am happy with my first attempt.

Do you think it would be easily done with a Dremel?

Not sure, I think you either have to have the tool stationary or the bit holder stationary so a vise might help you with that. If you give it a try let us know how you get on  :)

I have made several with a Dremel.  Just take your time and it will work out just fine.

Awesome thanks. Can you point me in the direction to the "BIT KIT" I would need to buy.

If you live in a area with a Menards they have a great kit for $7 other wise get any bit kit from Sears, Home Depot and Lowes will work.    If you are using the Dremel get a Aluminum Oxide Grinding Stone it will make quick work out of it.  I also recommend wearing safety glasses to avoid getting particles in your eyes.
