My first Gerber
on: August 23, 2011, 01:55:58 AM
My first Gerber arrived in the mail today.  I bought a used Legend 800 off of eBay for what I think was a good deal.

This is also my first MT, well good one I should say.  I hadn't even really considered a Gerber until I found the Legend 800.

I wanted scissors, replaceable wire cutters, a changeable saw blade, and outside opening blades.  It didn't take me long to realize that it wasn't going to be easy to find what I wanted.

I actually looked for a while before coming across the 800, and was very happy and surprised when I found it.

The only thing that bugs me is not having a can opener, but I can live with that.

The only thing wrong with the one I bought is that the lock on the scissors side doesn't work the greatest.  It does lock and unlock, but you have to fiddle with it some.

Overall I'm impressed and happy with my purchase.

I'm actually very surprised at how little there is in regards of reviews and videos.  I tried searching youtube, and there are only a couple of half decent videos on it, but there are hundreds of vids on most other MTs.

It's really too bad there's not more out there for the MT as I think it would suite quite a few people more then some of the other MTs out there.  But like myself when I started looking, I hadn't even considered it as I didn't know it existed, as I'm sure is the case for a lot of people.

One concern that some people seem to have is with different jigsaw blades fitting the holder, but I have not had any problems with the various makes I've tried.  I've tried Mastercraft, Jobmate and a couple of unknown makes they they all fit as well as the RemGrit blade.

Will be interesting to hear how you find the tool after you have used it for a while.

I handled one of these when they first came out, but found it too big for my hands.

IIRC it was featured here:

Not the most scientific of reviews I think. ;)

I could see where this would be too big for someone with smaller hands, but I'm 6'4" and have pan shovels for hands  :D

Ahh, I can't watch that vid.  It says it can't be played in my Country  >:(

One thing I was wondering, can you get a bit kit for this?  I found the 49445 and the 45200, but neither of them list the Legend for the tools they fit.

Wow, so the cheapest I can get one off of ebay is $46 shipped, amazon.ca doesn't list them (.com won't ship to Canada) and I couldn't find any in the local stores I checked.  I guess I'll be going with out for a while!

A quick update.  I've been using the Legend pretty much every day so far, and it has yet to disappoint me.  The scissors on it are fantastic!  I can't believe what those little things can cut through!

The pliers don't give quite as much pressure as I thought they would have, but still plenty for what I've needed so far.

The drivers seem to be fairly well made as well.  I've used the flats for prying various things, and the philips for tightening up a few things around the house.  I really wish it had a #2 robertson though!!

I tried the file on my hatchet, and it did an alright job putting an edge on it.

The changeable jig saw blades has been great so far.  I carry four in the sheath, an aggressive wood, fine wood, metal and a leather blade.  I've used all so far, cutting hard and soft wood, bolts, thin sheet metal and the blades have held strong.  I questioned how much pressure the little clip would take that holds them in place, but to my surprise, no blades fell out while using them.

Another great plus is being able to take the tool apart and clean and oil it.  After I did that to mine, all the tools and locks work great now!

So after finding out what it would cost to buy a bit kit, I decided to make my own.

What I did was take a bit extension holder and cut off the part that goes into the drill, then I used a flat head screw driver to make notches in the tube so it would fit over the Philips bit on the 800.

To my surprise, it works!  I used it to drive a 2" screw into a 2x4 with no problems.  No all I have to do is find a bigger sheath to be able to carry everything.

Sounds like a good home made answer and it good to hear you're getting alone with the 800.
