The Octane is a very nice design. One of my favorite Gerbers.

So if it was between this and the sidekick should I choose this? I like the idea of the pliers and I really want to try a gerber

The answer to that is you might need both. We do like to enable around here you know.
But if you have your mind set on a Gerber, the Octane is a nice model The Sidekick is a nice multi-tool also.

I think the Octane is a great tool.
The OHO pliers are great as always, and the tool set is minimalist but very functional. The pocket clip is excellent as well.

Don't judge a tool by it's brand

The Octane is a nice enough tool, though I didn't like the lock of the blade too much. Not as refined as, say, a LM Wave or something, but it's a good tool, certainly for just 30$. I can't comment on the Sidekick/Wingman.
I did find it's a bit like the Skeletool, though maybe a bit less polarizing. It could be it's just not for you

I had a Sidekick,I HAVE an Octane!
Its tool light, but possibly the best Gerber outside of the 400/600s
