Leatherman Charge TTi came scratched, dirty
on: August 31, 2011, 07:39:42 PM
Hi all,

Been lurking for awhile, first post though.  I recently ordered a Leatherman Charge TTi online, and it shipped in a gift tin.  The tin was not sealed, and the tool was just sitting in the top of it, exposed.  The pliers have some scratches on them, as do the handle scales.  Also, the tool is covered in these little hair like fuzzies from the packaging they were sitting in.  It's in every crevice of the tool, and when you open/close the blades and tools it feels gritty.

Is this normal?  I know I bought it to use, but for the price, am I being too picky?

I dont think it is a problem of being picky; If you received something that was not what you ordered you should complain.

It depends of course on whether the item was sold as used or as new/mint. Some minor scratches on the pliers could be acceptable, for me, even for a new one, since it is a tool, but nothing deep.

The TTi should be new, clean, scratch-free and smooth opening.  You may wish to seek a refund or replacement.

And no, its not normal.   :tu:  Good luck.

I think for the price of the TTi you should be granted the privilege of making the first scratches  :tu:

I'd send it back  :)

Let me guess: Amazon?

I only say that because I have heard this story several times reading through Amazon reviews on this tool. Either they have dishonest suppliers or dishonest customers; not sure which.

Regardless where it came from, I wouldn't want to have a used tool unless I paid for a used tool, so I'd send it back.

If it was supposed to be new and arrived in any other condition, send it back and demand a replacement, or refund.

Just wanted to make this clear: send it back to the seller, not Leatherman!

Are you psychic?

I ordered what I thought would be a brand new blister pack Charge.  Instead, I get one with a gift tin that isn't even sealed.  Little tiny black hairs from the faux velvet cut out/liner thing that holds the tool open.  Dry as a bone, no lube whatsoever, the little hairs making a horrible crunching sound every time a tool is opened/closed.  Yuck.

This is normal for Leatherman.

Not for any of the ones I've owned. Then again I've neither bought one in a gift tin nor one from Amazon. It souds to me like it has been used.

+1.

Leatherman is actually quite famous for making good products and shipping them in tip top shape.  I'd say they have had a few QC hiccups over the years but to say an occurrence such as this is normal seems out of line.  Vadim, you may have had a few bad experiences but I'm sure if you ask, most of the LM users here(the only dedicated MT users forum on the net mind you) would attest to the quality that is standard for Leatherman.

Either substantiate your post with a backup of evidence or leave the Reply button alone.   ;)

That's true.  I haven't bought too many Leatherman's that are pristine, but none look used if they are labeled new.  Usually it's the second or third party Seller that causes the problems.

I see what your saying now. But your other statement came across as it is normal for all Leatherman multitools to come in used condition. Sorry for misunderstanding what you meant.  :)

So does everyone agree then, that the types of scratches shown above in Vadim's pics are the norm for a brand new Charge TTi?

I have two now, that have both come with similar scratches etc.  I've never had another leatherman come with these kinds of defects.

I had a new tti arrive a few days ago and the plier head was scratched  on one jaw below wire cutter. checked my other hardly used tti, and it had almost identical scratches and so did my new wave. All caused by the head rubbing on the inside of the handles as they move forward in the final action on closing.
That is just the way they are as far as i am concerned.
My trouble is i never show initiative, but that's only because no one has told me to.

i would be disappointed to have a new tool have scratches on it... especially if it cost as much as the TTI!!

I can confirm the scratches on the plier head. Even if it comes unscratched, chances are pretty high that you're gonna end up having some at least a couple of days later.

My Leathermans also quite often have very noticeable resistance when you close them (as in: the insides of the handles rub against the plier head).

I don't really mind, however, as it does not impact any functionality of it at all.
