Some coin collection treasures -PIC HEAVY
on: September 27, 2011, 02:58:01 AM
As I've mentioned on a couple of other threads, I enjoy collecting coins. I've put together a nice little collection from various sources over the years. These pics are of some of my favorite pieces. This is by no means all of my coins, but some that are unusual and that I find interesting. first up:

These are a dime, quarter and half dollar of a pattern known as the Barber, after their designer. All three of these coins, all of the same design, were minted from 1892 to 1916. It's probably my favorite US coin design.

Next, we have some paper money, all from the Philippines during World War 2.

The top bill was issued by the Japanese government during the occupation of the Philippines. The other two bills are really neat. They were printed by Filipino guerrillas, usually on portable printing presses mounted in the backs of trucks so they could be moved quickly!

Up next are some coins and a bill from the US during the same war.

The quarter is the same as was minted from 1932-1998, but the dime is known as a "Mercury" dime, and there is also a "Walking Liberty" half dollar. But the really neat piece here is the dollar bill. See the word "HAWAII" printed on it? During WW2, there was a fear that the Japanese would invade the Hawaiian Islands. The bills stamped like that were useless on the mainland, so no espionage could be funded in the event of the invasion!

Here's the reverse of an 1883 nickel. Notice something missing? No? How about the word "cents"? Whoops! Some shady characters would actually paint these coins gold and pass them off on immigrants here in the US as $5 coins! Needless to say, the word cents was added pretty quickly in 1883, and these aren't the most common things in the world.

Here's the reverse of another US nickel, a 1943 S (for San Francisco). The proof mark over the dome means that this is a neat coin-a nickel made with silver instead of nickel! The nickel and copper in these coins was needed for the war effort, so from the middle of 1942 until 1945, US "nickels" were 35% silver. The way you can tell is by the P, D, or S stamped over the dome.

No mistaking this for a non-silver coin!

The Morgan dollar, the classic US "silver dollar". This particular one was minted in New Orleans in 1882. I love Morgans, such a beautiful bit of spendable artwork.

And, lastly, here's a coin that has no modern equivalent-an American 3-cent piece!

this is the exact same size as a modern US dime, but at 30% face value :). These were known as "trimes", and were not very popular. In fact, the 1883 shown is one of only 4,000 minted that year.

So, there you have it. I have a lot more different patterns, but these are among my favorites. Just be sure to forget what I wrote about silver nickels and keep them coming my way.... >:D :D.

There's no such thing as "Too pretty to carry".  There's only "Too pretty NOT to carry"...... >:D

Nice collection mate!

Here's that silver dollar my late Father carried EDC. Not sure what the story was behind him carrying every day was, and Mom did not know either. It had seen better days. Perhaps his life was perpetually connected to the coin??

Difficult for me to enhance what little features are remaining without darkening the photos. The coin is bright silver, as MAAS took care of what tarnish there was remaining after all his years of carrying it.

Very nice. I still have my old coin collection. I haven't actively added coins to it since High School though.

Good Lord, I can imagine ANY of your collections!  Unless, of course, you sold most of the coins to buy multitools  :).
@Xelkos-Very neat. That Morgan you have there was also minted in New Orleans. You can see the "O" underneath the wreath. I have a coin like that, a Filippino Peso that my Grandfather carried for good luck during WW2. It worked, so he carried it with him into action in Korea too!

@ Teofilo-That's the same exact coin that my grandfather carried! Same date and all. The one I have isn't in that good of shape, spent some time in the jungle :). I asked my father why he carried it, and was told it was to remind him of where MacArthur was leading them.

Great coins.  I have nothing near as cool or old as that, but I do have a few neat coins that I may take pictures of soon and post here.  Great pics Tom!

Wished I could find my father's 3rd reich coin. It had lettering on the edge. Haven't seen since the mid 80's.
He had several stashes of goodies, bullets, ect.  Had to give the bullets away when we were moving, as many were old war live rounds.

No, I would never sell any of it. I could take a few photos of some of the stuff I have. I haven't dug into it in years. Actually, the last time I did, I took photos of two UK coin sets that I have.

Going to see what I can dig up and take photos of. I enjoyed trade tokens more than anything else back then.

Some photos are pending.

Back when I was collecting coins and such, I was more interested in trade tokens, medallions, and of course coins. My collection isn't worth much I reckon, but then again, I never collect as an investment anyways. So here are a few photographs from one of my coin binders.

Here is something different. A souvenir medal of a famous French Canadian priest of Montreal.

A one half penny token issued by the Bank of Upper Canada, 1850. I have another one of these in better shape. Even so, it blows my mind to have something so old, and predates Canada at that.

A medal to mark the 1939 visit of King George VI, and Queen Elizabeth. Not worth much if anything...but the history behind it got me more excited than the value anyways. this one was handed down on my mother's side.

http://archives.cbc.ca/society/monarchy/topics/2367/

A few random pages of the binder.

And a few random close-ups of some of the trade tokens and medals that I have. For some reason, coins themselves didn't hold much interest to me. Trade tokens and medals did. I really liked the local ones, because I know they didn't make that many of them. It is Northern Ontario after all.

Here are a few interesting bits of paper money that I have.

Regarding your Occupational Philippines Japanese Government money, I also have a few bills.

And here are 3 unusual items.

The first two are only printed on one side, and are very small in size.

I also bought a bundle of these from a coin collector back in the early 90s. She told me she thought it was some form of propaganda money. I have had these for years and only recently realized what they are after doing a lot of online research digging.

An explanation.

So there you have it, a few items from my inactive collection.  :salute:

Very nice, Chako! Jeez, you don't do ANYTHING half-assed, do you?  :) I think that the trade tokens are really neat. I have a couple of old US ones from the Civil War era somewhere, have to find them.

I guess you could say that. I dug a little deeper and found a few American coins.

But before I do that, I have a super rare wooden nickel to commemorate the creation of the St Lawrence Seaway. To do that, they had to flood several towns along the river. My father told me it wasn't a good time for many folks.

This is a neat piece of history.
