Sidekick wire cutters
on: October 03, 2011, 02:34:07 PM
When you look at the user guide for the Sidekick it doesn't mention a hard cutter but on the tool there is clearly a notch at the base of the cutters . The photos on the LM website do not show this notch   Its also too large for most hard wire and serves little purpose unless its for wire stripping which I havn't tried yet .
Whilst on the subject of wire cutters also note how the cutters don't meet when the pliers are closed but do when the handles are squeezed. The are however very effective at cutting thin wire and paper clips as well as twin core cable ( 240V)  .

Just thought I'd share .

That does make me feel better about the wire cutters.  On the Octane, they were actually crooked and I could not get them to cut, but it's good to know LM put a little more precision into it.

I've had quite good results cutting a variety of copper wire with my Sidekick. :salute: Haven't tried any steel wire yet, but there's a coat hanger out in the garage that is begging to be chopped up. :)

Bob,

You need to make a fixture to hold the tool and then put your boot on the top handle....or wait I kinda have deja vu.

Juli's comments on the notch:

"WHAT IS THAT SMALL NOTCH AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SK AND WM WIRE CUTTERS :: A bunch of you have asked and no they are not hard-wire cutters so here is the answer I got from engineering, "The notch is for stress relief, to make the jaw stronger. Because the two halves of the jaw are coming together there, you need a relief to transition to the coined/sliding contact area. Take a close look and you'll see that to go from sliding contact at the pivot to cutter contact at the cutter tips, you need some kind of clearance allow that to happen without interference. It's just coincidental that it looks like a hard wire cutter.""

and:

"Wire stripper on the SK and WM is on the base of the can/bottle opener. Wouldn't recommend using hard-wire cutting on the SK and WM cutters or you'll tweak your pliers out of alignment. Juli@Leatherman"
Never underestimate the power of the fleece
