SAK pocket kydex sheath
on: October 13, 2011, 09:04:05 PM
As the title says. Would you like to see one? Would you carry it? I am going to make one and see how it goes. I'm also adding a pocket clip that way it keeps it up off the pocket bottom and eliminates the need for modding/drilling the Sak.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

Nice idea,

Could be perfect for knives with no split rings like the alox soldier  :tu:

Interesting idea but I don't know how good an idea it'll be.
The reason?

Kydex will scratch SAKs.  It'll really mess up scales in short order, celluloid, nylon or alox.  I mean, people complain about kydex sheaths scratching hardened knife metal.

Leather would work much better.

Well I have a solution to that. If you look at my wave post about the kydex sheath I made for it. I applied a non marking/marring felt to the inside. This could also be done to these.

That would be a good solution.

Would I like to see one?
ABSOLUTELY!!!

Would I carry/use one?
Dunno - let me see one first  :pok: :pok: :D

There's a lot of merit in the pocket clip idea, but would it favour grip on the pocket so knife draws like a sheath, or favour grip on the knife so you have to draw both, remove knife, clip sheath then use the SAK? I'd be more tempted by the first scenario than the second. Another thought that might be nice is a suspension point (simple eyelet) instead of a pocket clip. That way it could be used with a belt hanger, caribiner on a rucksack strap or even a neck lanyard.  Either way I'm looking forward to seeing how this comes out  :tu:

Well it could be either way. I could make it tight to wear you have to pull both or loose enough to be drawn out by itself although that method would be a little longer so the tool doesn't accidentally fall out. Soon as I get a chance I'll mock one up.

My concern with felt liners is from living in a cool-cold/wet environment- felt sucks up moisture.

Maybe a layer of a thin closed cell foam? Cork?

I was thinking recently about kydex holder for SAK.

What I had in mind is kydex pouch-clip (d*mn don't really know the right word)....

What it should be is a pocket clip for carry inside pocket, kydex should be cutted with two "wings" and they should be folded to grip over a SAK, and one more peace of folded kydex at bottom so that SAK stays at place...

Hope that make any sense?!?

That makes sense to me. Maybe I'll throw one in to your modded SAK.

I love this idea! I've been wanting something like this for a while. I actually have an idea for a larger pocket sheath, one that has pockets for a Leatherman Squirt, a 1xAA flashlight, a Fisher Bullet Space Pen, and a clip-on/snap-on pocket for the SAK, so that you can change which SAK you carry. It might sound a bit big, but I think it might be feasible. Alternately, you can drop the clip-on idea, and just make a different version of the sheath for each SAK you might want to carry.

I have a prototype of this sheath made out of taped-together 3x5 notecards (:D) that I've been using for months and I originally intended to have it made out of leather or nylon, but I've been warming up to Kydex over the past few weeks and would really love to do it w/ that instead. Any idea how much it would cost?
