Maglite conversions
on: October 29, 2011, 09:01:50 PM
If two is one and one is none, then I think I'm set for the Zombie apocalypse. :ahhh

4D, 3D, 3D, 2D, 3 AA, 2AA, 2AA 2AA

There was another 2C but the batteries corroded inside too far to repair.  :(

Anyway.  I've finished converting all of these to terralux LED conversions.

The 4D has a 600 lumen conversion:

The 3D and 2D's have a 140 lumen conversion

and the AA's all have the 80 lumen conversion

Not worldbeaters by todays standards, but solid performers for emergency lighting. :)

You gotta love the old maglites as mod fodder.

I took my just built 2D mag running 3C's and a Cree XML LED out tonight, man those things are bright. Although it's not just the brightness that impressed me, the throw is good too.

I need more maglites.......

I just recently found my poor old 3D maglite. Alone it sat discarded in an old briefcase, it's batteries leaking. It's battery cap fused shut. After using a stilson wrench to open it, and some steel wool to clean out the leaked battery. It was time for a Malkoff LED drop in with a UCL lens

Boy has this thing got throw! It uses a cree XP-G emitter that gives about 260 lumens, but it throws it like a demon! It easily outthrows my Surefire LX2, and my Surefire 6P with Nailbender XM-L dropin. Definately given a new lease of life to an old friend.

(Image removed from quote.)

Is that a kit? What size Maglites are those?  I thought the multiple emitter setups required 4D or bigger lights... :ahhh

No they are not kits.  The components are sourced from various suppliers.
The only "custom" component is the heatsink.  This is the component the
LEDs sit on and it also soaks up some of the heat generated by the LEDs.
heat + LEDs = less light and in extreme circumstances the LED will cook itself
to death.

Most of the Mags in the photo are Mag 2Cs, my personal favourite form factor
They are not using normal alkaline batteries but using 18650 rechargeable li-ion
batteries typically found in laptop PCs.  With a little modding I can fit 2 li-ion
batteries in a Mag 2C to get 8.4 volts
