Fenix E01 question
on: October 28, 2011, 03:58:58 AM
Hey all,
I've decided to finally retire my Maglite Solitaire after many useful years on my keys. I'm thinking of the E01, but have a question: is it true that there is no lens protecting the bulb? How does this setup hold up being carried in a pocket attached to keys day in and out? I know that it's a popular light, but has anyone had problems with this? Thanks!

I switched from the Solitaire to a Fenix E01. I too was concerned about there being no lens cover. There absolutely is not. The bulb is exposed. I almost did not buy one because of that reason alone. Im very happy I decided to try one out. Honestly its the best keychain light I have ever had. I have had no issue without having a lens cover.  :tu:

Wow just read over that and I sound like a robot. Anyways there's no lens cover, but it has not caused any issues for me.

Agree with El Capitain.

I've gone through several DX lights (not all broke, looking for better) and took advice from others here.  It always works.  If I had to complain, the lack of lens allows some pocket lint to collect around the LED.  Easy to fix, but there it is.

Get one.  You won't regret it.

I have one on my keys and have for a long while an have experienced zero problems. It is a very nice light. I would also suggest checking out 4sevens preon 1. I love that little light so much. I carry both of those daily.

I have been carrying an E01 with zero problems.I decided to upgrade to the E05 because it has over twice the lumen output. The E05 is about the same size, has a lens, and about $8.00 more. You can't go wrong with either one.

I've had an arc aaa on my keys with exposed led for years and never had a single problem.  I wouldn't worry about it.

The "bulb" is a solid blob of plastic recessed into aluminum, you may scratch it if you try, but short of smash the whole light with a hammer you can't really damage it.

The E01 is one of the toughest aaa flashlights out there. Try searching candlepowerforums for E01 torture tests, you'll see what I mean. People tried everything, drop tests from 5 story buildings, freezing it for 24 hours in a block of ice, cooking it, one guy forgot one in the oven for an hour or so, baked it, but it still worked. There was a thread from scout24 where he winter tested it. Tied it to a snow showel and showeled snow, burried it for the night, tossed it 50 times across his garage on the pavement, ... It was scratched but it still worked. The Fenix E05 and iTP A3 didn't survive the toss test. Regretfully that thread didn't survive the big CPF crash.

Flashlights without the lens with this 5mm or 3mm led are more durable than the ones with the lens. E01, ARC AAA, PEAK Matherhorn +the Gerber Infinity Ultra AA are prouf of that.

This thread reminds me that I need to pick up some more E01s if I run across them on the cheap (beyond the typical $12 of Amazon). :D

I will chime in to give a wholehearted agreement to all that has been said.

The E01 is probably one of the most bomb-proof lights out there, short of the Arc AAA or Peak Matterhorn (no longer made, unfortunately).

I have carried one in my pocket for 2.5 years (up until last week which brought the arrival of a Fenix LD01 SS) with keys, coins, lint, etc.  It has worn through the anodizing in spots, but it still works just fine, every time.

If you are worried about scratching the LED, one of the best, and easiest, E01 mods is to take some #0000 steel wool and lightly scuff up the LED.  It reduces the output a bit, but in return you get an almost all flood beam.  It also makes the beam seem whiter than the blue/purple hotspot it has stock.

IMO, for the money, the E01 is a no-brainer type purchase.  You might as well buy a few!

I think I remember them saying on CPF that they were getting rid of them when the Eiger came around.  Although they may still have some with colored LEDs.

I'm not sure if Peak still maintains their site or not, since RMSK is now their distributor. I also don't see any of their QTC lights on the site, so my inclination is that it may be somewhat abandoned

These little things are pretty durable - a month ago I used mine in sauna, temperature was around 90 degrees of celsius (~200 Fahrenheit). Everything was fine until I forgot that it's not the best idea ever to touch it for adjusting lights direction. :D Ouch. Only problem was that when it was that hot I couldn't turn it off - head was stucked and had to wait until it cooled off.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. The E01 arrived yesterday, which was perfect timing because we haven't had power since Saturday night! I used it all day yesterday at work, we were setting up some generators to get some of the basics going (can't really run a paint store without a paint mixer... :)). The Fenix is SO much better than the Solitaire I had. Why didn't any of you tell me sooner! :twak:

I've been looking at one of these little gems for a keychain light.   Usually I grab this type of thing on ebay.  I see some for a good price from China.  Are these legit, or will they be knockoffs?

They are made in China so no, not a knock off. Although you might find them cheaper. The usual price they go for is about $12,50.

They are $12,61 on Amazon at the moment, which might get you one sooner.

Ok good to know.  I checked Amazon Canada and they are 21 bucks.  I'll shop around a bit more and see if I can find a better deal more local.  Thanks again.
