handsfree flashlights?
on: June 12, 2008, 07:32:50 PM
Hey guys, while my use of flashlights is probably quite different, I do have a couple I use for working on PCs (as they always seem to be behind/under in dark areas, and it's not easy to plug in those cables!)

first, my portable cheapy that I use to goto my inlaws etc:

it's one of those "free with the batteries" nothing really special about it... it says super krypto, assume thats to do with the bulb. anyways, it works, is very portable, but I find half the time I need both hands, and it end up in my mouth... (tastes bad!) it's a real pain in the ass, but what can you do...

second is my at home use:

that's right it's a searchlight (they claim 1million candle) it was also pretty cheap (about 10 or 15 euro...), and came with an adapter as it's rechargable, life of the spotlight is not so great, but the mini light has a pretty good life on each charge. The great thing about it is there are several flat surfaces to lay it at different angles on the floor so I can see what I'm doing. Obviously I don't use the spotlight as it gives me a tan, and dies off way to quick...

Anyways, I figure I'd see if you guys have seen anything suitable out there? I'd prefer if it was something I can set on the floor and it stays put than have one of those "cave explorer" headlights

Cheers,

I have several hands-free lights for working in the shop, but they're all LED headlamps.  I've modified most of mine with a "floody" beam so they're better for lighting "up close" work.  The benefit to the headlamp is that it's always pointed in the direction you want it to be.

I have 500w halogen work lights to set on the floor if I need area lighting.

This would be excellent for your purpose:

Spoonrobot wrote a great review of the Sidewinder (with lots of good pics) which can be found on this site.

If you need something cheaper, this should work:

In addition, Ray-O-Vac and Energizer both make reasonably priced 2C and 2AA incandescent task lights with tilting heads - 10 bucks or less.  They are designed to sit on their flat bases and swivel around and tilt up and down to direct the light where you want it.  Some version of these should be available at most larger hardware stores.

Roadie, they really do look cool! I have tons of Nite Ize accessories ( Figure 9 Rope Tightener is COOL!).. I do have the N/I Mag 2AA headband though.. It is pretty cool.. I remember seeing a pic where Dunc has the Lite Bite. I have one, but I find it is really awkward..

That seems to be a pretty good/cool solution... while still being portable...
