How do you do your coffee? Drip - Perc - Press
on: November 20, 2011, 03:19:40 PM
Sitting here on a Sunday morning, with my hands wrapped around a warm mug of Black Gold, and started wondering...

What's your preferred method of brewing?

I'm an old fashion Percolator man myself. Love the full natural flavor, and I like to keep a pot on all day long, ready to pour, without the problem of a drip machine cooking the coffee into thick sludge.

Turnsouth, didn't you know coffee is at its best when you can eat it with a spoon?

I don't drink as much coffee as I used to when I worked. Now that I'm retired I have one of those one cup at a a time drip makers and I usually just have one big cup in the morning. When I do use my big drip pot and make 8-10 cups I pour the coffee in a pre heated thermos type container and it stays hot most of the day.I also drink my coffee black.I got used to drinking it black because when I was in the military I didn't always have access to cream and sugar and had no choice but black and got used to it.Nothing better than a big steaming cup of black Joe before I had to go out and fight the indians or guard a wagon train.

How do I do my coffee? In massive quantities  :). I have a drip machine that I use every day, two cups in the morning and then fill my travel mug before leaving for work. We also have a machine at the store, multiple mugs there as well. I do have a percolator and I love it, but it's kinda slow for first thing in the morning. I usually use it on the weekends. Geez, just typing here and I need another cup......

Preferred method is the good old filtered coffee, what you call a drip brewing I believe.  It's the convince that gets me.  The cafetiere (French press) is just such a hassle to clean I just can't be bothered to make one in the first place.

This thread has got me brewing up a fresh batch as we speak.  :D

Nothing mentioned here I would consider real coffee. :pok: >:D I've tried them but nothing compares to the full flavour of the real Turkish coffee (or Greek, Arabic, whatever you may call it). You can read more about it here.

My favorite?

Espresso machine.  Ended up with a Gaggia Classic because of that.  Nothing like it.

Next favorite:  French press.

Third:  Drip coffee with a metal filter (Paper absorbs too many of the oils--which has lots of the flavor)

Fourth: Percolated coffee over a campstove.

Least favorite? Iced coffee.

Drip here its easy to make. I like industrial strength Colombian coffee. When its done I turn the heat off so its doesn't get old.

Drip here as well, don't need nothing fancy. Hills Bros. is all I make, I don't get into any of these exotic brands or fad flavors. I don't care at all for Ice Coffee and I also don't like coffee so strong it'll strip paint. A nice medium blend, a little cream and sugar.....sometimes a touch Bailey's, all I need.

Ice cold for me all year round, about one a day! (Frappe)
I do not like hot drinks.
A couple of times a year I will have a Greek coffee (See enki_cp's and edc's posts above)

Drip coffee here, except I use a manual drip cone and metal filter. It drips the coffee right into my carafe where just a few minutes later it gets into my cup. I changed from an automatic drip to the manual drip just because the hot plate effect on the brewed coffee.

OK, now what is everyone's story about getting started on coffee? Mine is when a child of 4-5 I always asked my dad if I could have a sip of his coffee. He ALWAYS told me I would not like it until one day he relented and I got a sip. Yuckkkk, I said. He drinks it black and strong. My grandpa drinks coffee too and when he offered me a sip I found out he used cream and sugar and I loved it. From that day on every time I visited my Grandpa I got my own cup. A coffee drinker was born. Now later on I got to where I liked it black too but not bitter. My dad liked his bitter. I like strong coffee just not bitter.

I was always a tea drinker, ran in my family, British lineage and all. Then I joined the Air Force, and I needed something strong to keep me awake in the radar tower, in the middle of the night when nothing was going on (90% of the time...)

Now that was strong coffee, not to the point of Turkish where you feel like you should brush your teeth after having a cup, but it kept me bright-eyed for twelve hours :o

We do the "turkish coffee" style around here, and instant coffee.
although the french press is gaining popularity lately.

Predominantly a tea drinker, though I do veer onto instant coffee occasionally. If I'm having fresh coffee I do like a cafetierre - brew it to the strength required then stop  :tu:

I'd never even consider one in this county but I have enjoyed the odd frappe in Greece, and occasionally had a small up of their rocket fuel (takes coffee to a whole different level) with a traditional Greek breakfast with the yoghurt and honey etc - not in the coffee I hasten to add  :D

Yea, that's why for me anything else is just coloured water.  :D

@stressmaster5000

I was taught how to cook coffee when I was about 9 or 10, but didn't start drinking it till I was in my teens, 14 or 15. I did get to drink the white coffee when I was a kid, that's 2-3 spoons of turkish coffee and a LOT of milk.

So true...

I used to be an avid frappe (shaken, not stirred :P) drinker and still like this contraption for allnighter coding sessions. After moving to a colder part of the country, though, I turned to French coffee for weekdays/work, merely for the sake of its being hot and capable of being produced in massive quantities and carried around in a thermos. :) Weekend mornings it's always a double Greek :P coffee cup, and when I get out with friends I usually prefer some Italian caffeine (usually Espresso Freddo). Percolator-type coffees are great but I hate the fuss and wait... :-\

BTW I was watching a CSI episode the other night and they nailed the suspect by examining the saliva that (supposedly) sits on the bottom of the cup only in Greek(/Turkish/...) coffee. Interesting, albeit a bit unsettling... :D

I use an electric 12 cup percolator, and the brewing time is one cup per minute.
So there isn't that long of a wait, even for a full pot. :tu:

Moka pots anyone? Used to prepare coffee on that a long time ago. Nowadays I've cutted down most of the coffee because it ruins my stomach. Once in a while I still drink it at my mom's, she has one of those popular nespresso machines.
