Victorinox Revolving Display Case:
on: December 08, 2011, 08:51:05 AM
Besides getting knives while I was gone to Iraq, I wanted to find a way to show some of my knives off.  Well, here it is....got it off E-bay...thing cost MORE to ship than what I paid for it (total was under $70, to include shipping).  In case you are wondering, you use rare earth magnets (5-lb strength) to hold the knives to the metal display platform.  In side the case and behind the display platform, there is a storage area where one can store boxes, pouches, etc.  My only dislike is that the pressboard is not very durable.  I had to put longer screws into the door hinges in order to give it strength.  One side already pulled out, and the longer screws helped.

One side has Grand Prix (including the one I got yesterday, w/o hook or fine screwdriver) and Master Craftsman (1960's to 1980's Space Shuttle):

Other side has (for you Alox fans out there) red First Mate, Pioneers, Soldiers (old, new, GAK, OH Trekker):

it's very cool, but doesn't displaying the tools like that damage the backsprings over long periods?

Ya I heard that too, or it is just a myth?  Also if its strong magnets holding everything up, does it then magnetize all the saks?

Anything that gets magnetized can easily be de-magnetized.

As for the springs...yes, it could be an issue years down the road. Still makes for a great presentation though.

Hence, why I plan on rotating knives or something like that.  This is only a "show and tell" type of thing.  I am still looking for a more permanent solution.  Most likely, Rubbermaid container, or, a knife roll.

It looks awesome though that's for sure.   I need a good storage solution too.  Right now I use fishing tackle boxes and I made some foam liners so each slot can hold 2 knives.  It's not a great solution, but for now its ok.  I dont have boxes for all of them and I didnt want them to hit each other.

It was all I could come up with walking around Canadian tire.  The foam stuff is in rolls where you buy kitchen accessories.  I think its meant to be anti slip matting for kitchen use.  Works good enough for my purpose until I can think of something better.  This way you can mostly ID the knives by being able to see the components though.

When I first started, I would just lay them down on a shelf. Yours is a better solution that I like. Simple and effective.
