Grand Prix geneology
on: December 04, 2011, 07:04:54 AM
Got another Grand Prix in.  So, it is ALMOST complete, the geneology of the Grand Prix.  I will upload these later to the Swiss Wiki:

:sak:

L-R, T-B: 1970's era Grand Prix (sharp awl point, gold-tone cross and Model-T, flat Phillips w/ can key); 1980-82 era Grand Prix (closed one is also from that era)(flatter awl point, silver-tone cross and Model-T, flat Phillips w/ can key); 1986-1991 era (round Phillips w/ can key, new fine screwdriver, inside liner next to file removed); 1992-1995 era Grand Prix (key ring present, rivet scissors, hook replaces bottom fine screwdriver; round Phillips w/o can key; this one is NIB/OS purchased in Seoul, ROK in early 2009, and seen under the Grand Prix Swiss Wiki article).

Getting together all the variations is quite the challenge, well done.  And thanks very much for updating the wiki with the information  :salute:
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Very cool to see all these in one place. Not my fave model personally, but like Neil says, it's impressive to see them catalogued like this! It's great to work a collection up towards a goal. well done :)

Hi,

You tried to upload something to SAKwiki or attach your image to the page, but it didn't work. Some how a garbage page was created.

Upload your image to the SAKwiki 91mm gallery.  Then alter the Grand Prix page; sizing the image accordingly.  Or just upload the image, and I'll get it on the page. We're removing all hot-links from the Wiki as most of them fail before too long, and it's not accepted practice on the net.

Looks like the only "major" version he still needs a Victoria/clip blade one  :pok:

How many "different" version there are really depends on how minute you want to get into changes in the tools. If you take it to the most ridiculous level, there are at least 15 different versions of this knife, probably more. Since the first version of this knife in the early 1970s, every single tool in it has changed at least once, and most more than that. Add that to the fact that they didn't all change at the same time leads to a large number of permutations. I have 11 different versions of this knife, and I've seen several versions for sale that had tool combos that aren't in that 11.

(follow up to last post)

IMO, there are six "major" versions of this knife, all with several variants:

1. Early 70s: Victoria, clip point version, square Phillips
2. Mid to late 70s: Officier Suisse, spear point, nickel silver inlay
3. Early 80s: SS inlay, tapered awl
4. Mid 80s: Round cankey Phillips, fine screwdriver
5. Late 80s: round cankey Phillips, no screwdriver, no hook
6. Early/mid 90s: round solid Phillips, hook, no screwdriver

Honorable mentions:
A. the 2006 VSAKCS Space Shuttle knife, which by tools is technically a grand pix, not a master craftsman
B. the 84mm Grand Prix

Looks like Bren10man won another one.

If the one I just won is as the pics are, it has no fine screwdriver on the bottom, and not even a hook.

I like the Grand Prix, as it is the first SAK I ever got to play with.  I am looking for an early 1980's one with round Phillips screwdriver and early flat-bladed screwdriver.  Then, I will call it a day on that model.

At the gunshow yesterday, I cleaned-out a seller's 5-lb grip weight rare earth magnets.  I am beginning to display knives on my Victorinox revolving display case.  When done, I will make pics and show-n-tell here.

Yep, Looks like #5 from my list above. Now you just need a Victoria model for the set.

OK...I got the "#5 on the list" as jazzbass described above.  It has:

- no hook
- no fine screwdriver, newer or older one, on the bottom
- has sewing hole in awl
- bottle opener/screwdriver opens half-way
- no-groove for scissors spring; and screw; in scissors
- Phillips driver on bottom has Can Key
- no key ring
- no liner seperating the file/metal saw from the other blades

What is the date for this one?  Need to know which order to put it in in the display case with the other Grand Prix's.

Now, I need a round Phillips driver with earlier fine screwdriver and awl w/o sewing hole to, I think, to complete the collection.
