Yeah, I agree. I used to carry a huntsman with me everywhere, but I only used the small blade because why not? I’d opt for either the nail tool or alox awl any day of the week. For a full-sized folder guy, the main blade is the small for me.

I like the small blade for fine work/draw cutting, carried some SAKs with nail files, I just don't use them that much. Besides, redundancy isn't so bad, after all victorinox steel isn't well known for edge retention.

It’s also well known for being easily sharpened.  example: with the bottom of a ceramic mug or an appropriate stone.

I see your point, though.  :tu:

Reminds me a lot of the old Stockman knives. Many (especially Case and Camillus made) were marked on the spey "FOR FLESH ONLY", mostly for surgery (largely, castration) on livestock.

Well... I still stick by what ive said earlier, the small blade Is my main blade. I'll use the Sak main big blade if i need a bigger blade for the job. But the small blade works just fine to cut most everyday stuff.
A "nail" file on a full sized sak (84/91mm) always seemed silly to me. Nail care and grooming is what the small Sak's are for, that's what i have a classic on my keys for...  :D

It makes much more sense to me having an actual file in there, like the metal saw with two files than a nail file. And the two blades of course...  >:D
But like everything, there is no rights or wrongs here, only personal preferencies

My small blade is always used for utility and work use.  I keep the larger blade for food prep, etc.

I guess we'll leave that for another topic.

Smell it, Jack!

PS This is Jack Nicholson in the movie Chinatown. Don't try this at home!

Even if you do live in Chinatown?...

On a two blade SAK, the small blade is my utility cutter. It opens all boxes, mail, slices jute twine for the green, and whatever. The large blade is my slicer for when Ineed longer reach like cutting sandwich in half, or slicing an apple, or anything the small blade can't do. I use the small blade to avoid wear and tear on the late blade.

Growing up in the 1950's when ALL men carried a pocket knife, I saw them do this  very frequently. The small blade was an awl, scraper, poking and dirty work tool. The larger main l blade was kept in as good a shape as possible. Kind of a "just in case" kind of thing.
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

Good reason for a two-blade SAK. One of the problems with the Classic is that it only has a large blade.  ;)

This. But since I don't do much "field work" with my knives, I tend to not need to use the larger blade in very dirty tasks, hence the possibility of having the nail file/cleaner instead of the small blade.

I grew up in the same time period and have the same view. I use the small blade the most and keep the large one reserved for tasks that require a longer blade.

The old 65 mm Pocket Toolchest has that (although I have other ideas for that tool).

I would like to see the sheeps-foot blade from the Radio Shack Electrician on a Spartan or Tinker as a replacement for the small pen blade, or even as the only blade on a Compact or Walker.
