Stupidity and ignorance nearly costed me my job
on: May 01, 2014, 08:41:38 AM
I just need to put this here... Nearly lost my job...

I'm operation speSmurfpillst in my company (waste management) so director sent me nearly a month ago to Poland (Kielno) to check some machine we like to buy for some remediation projects... Namely it's drum screen mounted on trailer. So I was there, checked the machine, tried it on spot... All well... Machine is good, working condition, etc...

I've agreed with guys over there to make a proforma invoice on which we will pay and to buy it. So they did it, and sent it to me and my director via mail.

We delayed somewhat payment while negotiating some terms and price a bit... Also transport and some other issues... At last we prepared everything for payment (namely my director) and issued "green lite" to financial department.

Shortly after we received a mail from known mail address, namely the address from which we had corespondence prior to our visit and from which we received proforma invoice. They stated that they have problem in their bank, and to make payment on other bank account, in different bank (offshore bank in London)... And they sent us also NEW proforma invoice with instructions.

Upon receiving that we contacted our bank to redirect money and to new account... So the bank reacted but they couldn't do that while money went to recipient bank. So it needed to be withdrawn... So we took action, but withdrawing of payment can be made only if recipient confirm it in his bank.

At the end yesterday I received a call from owner of company that is selling the machine where he asked us why do we want to withdraw money? I explained that we received mail from their mail address stating that account is wrong, new proforma invoice, and instructions for payment...

They said that money IS ON THEIR ACCOUNT... The right one!!

At the end I've sent them on private mail all corespodence... Machine is ready and they ship it on monday...

Their mail account has been hacked!!

At the end I must say we had more luck than we think! And I needed to share with you guys just as FYI.. Take care when you are on web!!!!

yeah that seems a bit odd...

Thanks for the info. Most of us underestimate the risks on the Internet.

Luckily, their storie again finished well, often there is no happy ending in such stories.
If you want to be happy, be.
