just trolling along, on quiet 1st day of 2012 and come across this..

interesting novelty and nice custom works, not sure on actual finish (looks sharp)..part serrated.
but for pricewise, would hunt down a Wave 20th Signature edition..
Chako's Damas and DLC Charge are better with LM own prototype imho :)

I could be wrong, but that Damascus looks fake. Almost as if it was printed with a pattern on the blade. Just something looks off to me.  :think:

If it is real, a great find.

Looking at the blade closely i am leaning toward it being damascus, the depth of the etch and the texture of the blackening looks right, although considering the shape of the blade being perfectly that of the original it makes we wonder.
i suppose its possible to print or paint on a patterned barrier layer of something then etch the exposed metal, blacken, then polish with sand paper to expose the raised pattern, but i think this would be immediately obvious to the buyer as they should be able to see a faint pattern along the blade edge and across the back if it were real damascus, which would be difficult to simulate.
Also the number stampings would require the blade to be annealed then rehardened if it was the original causing more problems.

Seems far too much effort for a scam that can be exposed too easily,
The maker is in my opinion either a very good artisan or an idiot.

Why use an AL though? for that price i would expect the top of the range charge.

If it's real it's better than my attempt at damascus blades:

It still looks fake to me for some reason. Possibly because the patterns are too dark. But I am by no means an expert on the matter. I also don't see any of the folding extending into the bevel...usually there are some faint patterning there from my experience.

When I view that ebay page, I get lots of little boxes with red X's in them. Can anyone see what else he has photos of?

great stuffs Chako :drool: & Tofty :tu:. Those Damascus steel used gives some comparison on its  typical layered' pattern..
BT for those drool factor!.

I am not an expert but I have never seen serrations like that on a factory knife. I also noticed that the plunge grinds are straight and LM's are curved. I also can't see him stamping the tang on the original blade. I am wrong a lot of the time but I think it is legitimate.

It looks like Damasteel with a deep etch. Probably made by a knifemaker??

Actually, if you want my opinion, it looks like the guy did such a good job that it looks fake.  If that makes any sense.  If real, it is real high quality work.

Thanks Allan. Actually I can see those three pictures okay. But if you scroll down his eBay auction page, there are several other red X boxes that I wonder about. Are they photos of other custom work the guy has done?  Or are they just bad logo/text links?  :think:

Looks like real damascus to me. You can see where the pattern is ground off the edge from sharpening
