Help with my Surge.
on: January 04, 2012, 07:08:10 PM
Hi all, I got a Surge for christmas and at first i noticed it was hard to get it closed.

At first i though it just needed to be broken in. But 10 days after i got it, it's still takes some force to close and when it does close it snaps close.

Here's a video of what i mean, if you have your volume up towards the end you can hear it just snap.

There's something hinky with it; I don't know if it's a pivot problem or not, but you might want to return it to where you purchased it for an exchange, or send it to Leatherman to fix. :/

It is likely that its settling and the plier tip is getting caught on the large bit driver's bit. I wouldn't worry too much, you do have to remember that there are a ton of moving parts on these tools and they are bound to get caught at some point.

The pivots on Surges are notoriously hard from factory and with the 6 that I've owned and modded, they are always in need of a pivot adjustment. The OHO blades aren't easy to open before.

Why stop now?

I have that same problem with both my wave and surge, but it is always do to the bit driver not fully down all the way.

Thanks guys, i'll check it out.

Edit: Yep it was one of the tools. When i took all the tools out and closed it, it closed perfectly fine. So now i'll close them with each tool individually too see who the trouble is. It was the large Flathead Driver that was messing it up.

Is there anything that i can do?

I have 2 Surges and both of them do that. The Black Oxide one little more then the plain steel one. To close the tool just apply pressure over the plier pivots with 2 fingers (not the entire handle) it will snap close pretty easy.

Yup if my large flathead isn't down all the way I get caught on it with the plier heads. The tabs inside each handle that the heads slide closed on can sometimes be bent out a bit more to clear the inside tools. These tabs get bent down sometimes after use.
