I'll let Grant expound, but we've had ads on here for a while.  They came down for a bit but they're coming back, to help cover costs of the forum.

...and to steal your MT's for me! >:D

Just seen it, I think add's are okay as long as they don't start dominating the page like some I've seen on other forums. I still reckon a PayPal donate button is a good choice, you might be surprised how many members would use it, a what you can afford button, something like that, these buttons are available as plugins. Also a referral link to your hosting company, most hosts payout as long as someone signs up after coming from your link, just waffling on :tu:

Unfortunately the monthly server costs are not free... for now we have implemented adsense, and there is a new donation feature coming soon...

The current location of the adsense is still under debate as to where we want them appearing, and refining the categories to more relevant items.
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

We'll be playing with the placement for the next little while, but I have no plans to put any more than that on the forum.  I don't want this site to become one of those places people can't go because of the insane amounts of ads.

As for the Donation button, Whoey and I are configuring that right now, and it should appear in the next day or two.

i fort the ads only earned money if people click on them. i never click on those so i block them. if the site gets cash just for me to see them then i will happily unblock them.

im much prefer a donate button though. ill give a little every month.  :tu:

just a quick aside ...

Upper left hand corner which shows (what do you call it) ... this ...

    Multitool.org »
    Site Use FAQ's »
    Q's and (hopefully!) A's »
Post reply ( Re: What the smurf is with this? )

... the multitool used to go to the forum home, but now it goes to main page home ...

just thought I'd mention it in case it wasn't intentional  :tu:

the logo goes to the forum home page, the breadcrumb trail as well... we have a link/menubar on the top right of the page if you're wanting to go to the actual mto site (and others) not the forum.

Don't worry about clicking them unless there is something you are genuinely interested in.  We get a fraction of a cent for impressions (views) and a slightly larger fraction of a cent for clicks, so it really isn't worth it to click on them if it's not something you want to look at.  In fact, false clicks can have a detrimental effect for us, so only click on them if you mean it!  :D

The donate button should be live tomorrow- we are just trying to work the kinks out of it before we open it up to everyone.

BTW, we have had a donate button on SOSAKOnline for about six years now, and I think it's been used maybe twice in that time, which is why I've never considered it to be a priority.  Never let it be said I'm not willing to be proven wrong!

Used to be so, but now it's changed for me ... breadcrumbs lead to forum as listed other than parent directory which leads to main site.
If it helps I'm on firefox 9.01   :tu:

Menu bar in top right has changed in appearance. First entry (main site) showing in smaller font size than others too (I'm assuming thats work in progress though)  :salute:

If any of this is stuff you don't need right now Whoey feel free to ignore it  ;)  :D

wierd... are you sure you are clicking the breadcrumb link and not the link in an ADSENSE ad?

what if you use the "Home" link.

I'm using FF8 under Ubuntu so it's a bit tough to reproduce here...

Would it be possible to run two site versions; without ads for paying subscribers, and without for everyone else?

I don't care either way - gotta get the cash to run this place from somewhere :)

The ads don't bother me; I have a charter membership, probably running out soon, and I'd rather MT.O get as much of the limited income floating around as possible. :tu:

Is the one ad we are showing that annoying?

To be honest, I'd rather have a paycheck from a faceless organization than take money from members here- or at least if I do take your money, it will be for some great MTO goodies like hats, patches, stickers, mugs, shirts etc!   :D

I'm running an adblocker (as standard - I've not singled you out for neglect  :P ) so no false links
"Home" link goes where it should  :tu:

FF9 only popped up as an upgrade for me today ... but I'd be surprised if it was that ... just checked IE works fine, so it's a FF issue
