Any chance of doing the mag glass in stainless??

Some of the cheap knock-offs do this already, you should be able to get one cheap and see if you could transplant it.

The best option for a silver mag glass woudl be to make one of nickel silver.  If you use non heat treated steel its going to not be smooth at all, and heat treating is a pain.  Brass and or nickel silver slide like butter though on SAK backsprings.   :tu:

I've read up to page 30 and I'm curious as to what the liners are made of. Specifically the colored ones.
Just ordered some pivots and flat heads.  First project is going to be a solo.

I work in aerospace and have quite a bit of titanium at my disposal. Once you shape your scales do you heat treat them?

I was anodizing aluminum liners to get some colors but those dont last super long and will chip eventually.  I mostly just stick to bare metals now, brass and nickel silver.

Ti liners you can anodize a few colors but again the problem of durability as the oxide coating is pretty thin.

No need to add any heat to Ti alloys for my purposes.  You actually want to avoid heat as it significantly hardens the material and makes drilling and tapping a chore.  This is why waterjet beats laser to cut out Ti parts, no heat issues.

The only times I can think heat would be needed is if you need to bend Ti alot, or to 'reset' the spring position of a Ti liner lock or lock bar, or if you are doing one of the chisel grind box cutter Ti blades, then you'd want it hard as possible.

Cool.  I've got an argon box to do a local heat treat if need be and I could always drill and type prior to heat treat.
I'll post some pics once I get done with my first.

Those pocket clips you've posted, the two hole ones. Are you making those or outside vendor?

I completed a Ti/brass conversion of a CT Lite today and forgot to post the in progress pics of liner making.

The CT layer and light module layer each needed 2 special liners of unique shape and also thicker than standard ones at 0.040" so I had to hand cut those.  Its good to be reminded now and then why waterjet rules for liner cutting.

The cheat trick I do though is to only cut and polish the inside of the liners and leave a few mm large on all the back sides of the liners.  Then I make a Ti/brass sandwich and grind/polish them all together and then not only does it ensure the liners are all even with the scales, I dont have to hand cut those parts.  :D

And here is the monster in all it's glory.  I lucked out and the pivots needed were exactly 1.000 inches, so I spliced 2 half inches ones together for each and didnt have to alter the length at all.

Yes, that is a beautiful beast.

Me thinks you're going to have alot of calls for the brass mag holder and brass liners all polished up and shiny.

The weight must start to be a consideration when you get that thick. Ti scales instead of cellidor, brass liners instead of aluminum - plus all the tools. At some point the thickness and weight must work against comfortable EDC.

But - if that were my knife - I wouldn't notice the weight in my pocket much. Because I'd have it out showing it off all the time!

Maybe I could add backpack straps as back layer tools?

I do love brass liners even though they add to the weight.  Maybe in the future I can skeletonize them to reduce the weight.

Seriously though: great work. I love this thread.

Ive only come accross 2 people who used the flashlight module in my years of modding, so I probably wont tackle that one. :D  The bit holder for sure.  I dont know if it should be brass or nickel silver, or maybe Ti would be best.  Ti could work actually since its not a backspring tool, it just free rotates. Hmm Ti that thick would be pricey... but then it could be anodized too... hmmm Well we'll see.  Im still patiently waiting for the Tormach to make its way to Canada and then learn how to use it, but for sure I can see making up some custom parts to get a SAK up to its max blingy potential.  :D

Oooooh, skeletize me a titanium and brass SAK!!! :tu:

I wonder how much you could remove from such a knife and still have it be durable? With the screws and pivots it should be stiff enough to carve out a fair amount of scale.

But then you'd have the law of diminishing returns kick in. The less metal means more labor (and higher cost). You kinda reach a point where the knife weighs nothing and costs a fortune! :twak:
