cybertool blade mod
on: June 08, 2025, 10:46:33 PM
I just wanted to ask if it's possible to flip the main blade and small blade plus the spring bar so that the main blade is on the outside?

The reason I ask is I was going to use a screw on oho thumb button. I may have to massage the outer frame and the scale but my my concern was whether the layer could be reversed.

No to the spring swapping directions. Would it work? I have no idea. My guess would be no just because of the pin locations and the spring profile. Don’t listen to me though, I really have no idea. That’s something I’ve never even considered it just because of the nail nick locations.

Someone with more experience than me might have a better answer, but at the very least the spring tension will probably we wrong. The small bade has a longer section of spring and the long blade has a shorter section, so the tension is more evenly matched. If you switch them, the main blade may fold too easily and the small one may be too stiff to open.

An alternative would be to move the blade layer to the other side of the knife. The small blade nail nick might be difficult to reach depending on the neighbouring layer but that gives you full access to the main blade.

I’ve done a bit of preliminary fitting up, and I think this might actually work ok. Biggest issue seems to be the closed position of the small blade - it sits too deep so you can’t reach the nick. One way to solve this is to fit a small block of metal to the spring to hold the tang in the right position when it’s closed (brazed on? Maybe a blob of JB weld would be hard/strong enough?). An opener spring might also work, the blade would rest on the bellied-up portion of the spring - but this might push the main blade too high up for the same reason, and it loads the cutting edge which is not ideal.

Thickness is another thing to solve. The spring is 2.3mm; small blade is 1.3mm with a 1mm spacer; big blade is 2mm plus the 0.3mm bulge on the liner. So you’ll need a 0.7mm spacer between the bulge and the small blade, and a 0.3mm spacer on the inside of the big blade.

I only tried it loosely put-together on a jig, but I think my earlier concern about spring tension is moot. However, all things considered it would probably be much easier to just move the whole layer to the other side of the knife, with either an awl or screwdriver on the back.

The opener spring is also thinner than the blade spring. Assuming they fit, the two blades will probably rub against each other.
